John Bonham 32 years legend

Post by GUITARIDOL5682 »

The legend John Bonham has been gone 32 years 25th September 1980. If Zeppelin had carried on who would of made a brilliant drummer to fill his shoes. I've got a few people in mind but who would you of picked at the audition. Jason Bonham is good but not as good as his dad.

Bonzo was the best rock drummer! I don't think anyone could have filled those shoes.who were you thinking that could do it?

I've never considered Alex Van Halen to be anything beyond average... he keeps the beat, nothing more. For a big time rock drummer I'd go with Nikko McBrain. My favorite drummer is Matt Cameron of Soundgarden/Pearl Jam

Alex Van Halen has groove, technical chops and a signature drum sound.
Mean Streets, Outta Love Again, Light Up The Sky.... I could go on and on.
Gotta disagree.
Far beyond average.

Even Thin Lizzy's Brian Downey who is just so underrated that guy has a very similar style to Bonzo. One of his influences and i'm sure he could of done a better job then the bolloxed attempt Phil Collins made at Live Aid with Zeppelin. Phil is a great drummer, don't get me wrong but he needs to be well practiced.

I've listened to EVERY VH song, and the drumming is pretty much all the same on every song... to me that = average.

Its called playing for the song. Ample examples of Alex's technical skills in the VH catalog.
I watched him live a few months ago. He was masterful.
I have been a professional drummer for over 35 years. Alex is not a breeze to cover.
Even the drumming during the Jump guitar solo is not so easy to grasp.

As usual Paul, we seem to disagree!

Must be.

Shred, I get what you're saying, I just prefer other drummers. I think my absolute favorite bit of drumming is Peter Criss during 100,000 years on the Alive! record. Not the solo, mind you, but the rhythmic stuff during the sing-along.

Myself, I don't think anyone can fill Bonzo's seat. The Zep guys thought so too.
Again, it is about the song. No point doing YYZ fills in Back In Black.

Peter Criss?
Seriously?

Yes, seriously. Don't be a drum snob :D I've always loved the drums in that song, what's so odd about that? Was he the greatest drummer of all time? Nope. Did he fit the music being created? Yep.

As for Zepp, without Bonham in the recipe, you don't get the Zepp we all knew and loved. He was perfect for the music they created. Just as Lee Kerslake was perfect for the first two Ozzy records.

Sure I don't care for Alex Van Halen, but he was the perfect ingredient for the music. Change the drummer and you change the overall sound of the classics.

I'd also like to add that Scott Rockenfield of Queensryche always impressed me.

Great book! Loved it. One of the best KISS books released. Bonzo was the greatest rock drummer.
