Diary of a Madman Stage Setup

Post by ViperZ »

Does anyone have any pics or anything about the stage setup on Diary of a Madman? In one of the old videos with footage of Randy and Ozzy, there is a model of the stage with working trap doors, but there wasn't much info on it.I've seen many pics and even the video with Brad Gillis on the tour but I want to see what the stage was set up like in detail.

There is a great picture in a Japanese Randy Rhoads tribute book of the Diary stage from the side. You can see the front and the back of the stage in the shot. That might help you out.

I think Cableguyxx has a copy of that book, but I couldn't swear to it. I saw it when I visited Kelly Garni last year, he told me it's a rare, hard to find book, but it's on ebay from time to time.

The stage itself was a work of art. I can't believe Ozzy would go through all that trouble to have such an elaborate stage show and not have it professionally filmed...while Randy was still alive.

Maybe the stage gear is in a warehouse somewhere, arches, torches, trap doors, dwarf corpses and all?

great stage setup. I think Ozzy has made a mistake in that most subsequent tours starting with 1988's "no rest for the wicked" tour and through today, he's went with pretty much "no"stage set up. Mostly just video screens and amplifiers. Those early elaborate stage shows really added to the mystique, something he's sorely missing today.
That said...as cool as this stage was.....i always thought the '84 Bark at the Moon haunted theatre styled stage set up was much cooler than this one and easily the best Ozzy ever used.

"well they had planned on filming it (dates booked and all) but gee randy had to go and die before the dates".......it's not like today where 99% of big bands seem to film every show of a tour (or at least parts of it) this was 1982 man. God it seems ozzy gets blamed for bloody everything on this site now days :?

Watch "Speak of the Devil" video on youtube. Its Brad up there but that is the exact stage that Randy played on. Kinda depressing I know but you can see how everything worked :)

BTW Brad played a great show that night.
