Both the Les Paul and the PDV do not have any tape on the backs. I remember seeing a photo from the HMH Port Vale 1981. Randy has the PDV held up and the shot is from behind and you can see the dots and the volume pots plate and the trem block rear cover. I don't know if those 'workhorses' had been used beyond the stage of putting any tape on them. They had been well played and well knocked about. The 2 Jacksons being brand new, he may of wanted to keep them in good condition.

I went to check the cd and i noticed that the 2002 version of Tribute has a live pic of Randy holding the guitar away from his body. No sign of any tape on the back ?. So i wonder if it didn't get the tape put onto the back until the Diary tour ?. It would be interesting to see some more pics leading up to the diary tour dates starting.

Actually the Sandoval V does have tape on the back during the Diary tour. Check the new footage from New Mexico on Crowley and you'll see he has the top edge taped. You can clearly see the tape during the close-ups during the 2nd solo. I think it's safe to say this means he taped the whole back as well, after all why would he just tape the top edge? . He did not have the top/back taped during the Blizzard tour. He must have taped them to protect the back from his Diary stage clothes, which had big metal belts. I bet he didn't tape the Les Paul because it was the only one of his four main guitars he didn't get new, therefore the back probably already had buckle rash.

The duct tape also may have been applied as a shield against static electricity buildup. When that occurs the pickups will make a crackling sound when using high gain. The tape can ward off that sort of buildup/popping sounds. Certain guitars are more prone to it than others. Depends on paint, materials etc.

I remember when TA Tom went to see the PDV the last time it was on show. He did say that the top edge had tape on. So all i can think is that the stage clothes he was wearing on the last Diary tour. The studs and chains etc must of been scratching and dinting his guitars. I'm very surprised it has been left on, as it is a complete nightmare to remove when it has been left on for a long time i.e 28 years later. Mild solvent and a bit of patients, it's madness to make a relic and have them putting tape all over the back ????. They did have the sense to remove the tape from his amp heads and 4 X 12 cabs. I wonder if Ozzy & co removed the tape before shipping them back to Randy's family ?.

I have my flying v´s duck-taped too, ´cos I wear studded-belt and chains + key-chains in my belt, they really scratch the back of the guitars in a big way!!!

No tape on both of these so i'm saying it didn't get put on until Randy started wearing the studs and chains in late '81.
