You are a bright fucker ain't ya? You think Jake is better than Zakk. Since guitar playing is not a competition and since Zakk and Jake won't be sitting down together to show you what they can and can't do, maybe you should just pop open a can of shut-the-hell-up and get over your obvious inferiority complex.

Oh, and since Jake ain't doin' anything these days, maybe you should give him a call and see if he'll have a drink with ya?

I don't need them to sit down and show me what one can do and what the other can't....you can hear it on the CDs.

Or maybe you can hear what Ozzy allowed them to do?

Maybe Zakk plays what sells on his records and not everything he is capable of?

Ever heard Dead As Yesterday or Farm Fiddlin'? Zakk ain't as one dimensional as you think.

In fairness to Jake, this starts out] good...

I've heard a lot of Zakk's other stuff. He has a phrasing problem, he can't make the guitar sing or talk to you. What he does is he picks a pentatonic pattern and repeats it over and over again lightning fast. He has no taste. A great player plays melody and can make that guitar sing.

Wow, you just keep going with this, don't you?

90% of the guitar players on record don't phrase extremely well. Most guys just blow notes over a progression.

Now, drop the solo aspect and Zakk has written some good songs. That qualifies him as a great guitar player in my book.

For the record, I started this thread because I don't care for Zakk's style either. But unlike you, I don't say he sucks, because he doesn't. I just don't like his style. That's the point that I'm trying to get across to you that you seem unable to grasp. It's okay to not like his playing, but it's insulting to those who do like him when you come in and rag on how he sucks.

Read all my posts in thisi section and get a feel for discussing a subject as opposed to bludgeoning it.

Specifically, I like Devil's Daughter, Fire In The Sky (that's my favorite-great guitar playing song), Demon Alcohol is another great one that has a little Randy QR goofiness in it :P . From No More Tears, I love Time After Time, and both AVH and SIN have equally cool rhythm and solos. I think these two albums, the solos were well written and fit the song structure well. I don't really care for the two albums after No More Tears.
I agree fully Darin (are you sure we are not twins :? ) I had the plesure of seeing 'Demon Alcohol' played live in a bar here in Britain, it was amazing and a great shame it was cut from the folowing world tour.

I also like 'Old LA tonight' I know it was sentimentle and sappy but I thought it could have made a single. Also 'Voodoo dancer' was a cool outtake song.

Zakk has amazing riffs... I'd easily pick out a dozen or so and hold them up against anything Tony Iommi, Jimmy Page and Angus/Malcolm Young have done.
However... the solos are just not on the same level.

But there have been some good ones.
In particular ...
DEMON ALCOHOL... great fucking tune and a very good heavy metal solo. Fits really well with the song.

DEVILS DAUGHTER... an ok song, I thought the solo was well done. I think this solo is very reminscent of Randys concept in Over The Mountain, in particular the repetition of each lick. In fact I think this might be my favorite Zakk solo, just wish it wasn't proceeded by the gawd-awful sheep bleeting and lame sound FX.

S.I.N ... great bluesy intro solo... probably my favorite Ozzy tune with Zakk, dunno why... just feels like Ozzy to me. The sollo isn't anything special... but it fits well within the song - which is the most important criteria for a great solo in my opinion. It's not about notes or flash. The one thing I learned from Randy as a player is that every part of the song is a composition within a composition. The moment a bridge, intro or solo sounds like it can be lifted and placed in another song you have missed. I think that's why Zakk's solos don't connect with me.... too many of them feel like they could be from any Ozzy, pride & Glory or Black Label song.
This song also has a great outro solo.

ZOMBIE STOMP... I think this this could have been OZZY's best song... if not for the absolutely horrible chorus of "Hey, hey, do the Zombie stomp". OISH, what were they thinking. Totally killed it for me.
This is pure rock n roll and vaguelly similar to Van Halens "Everybody Wants Some" which build the same kind of way.
The entire song is like a riffing guitar jam... with really no solo, but theres a lot of fills.

... and thats about where it ends for me... nothing else Zakk has done really stands out to me.
Great riffs.... kick ass heavy metal songwriting.... but soloing falls short.

Zakks got some killer licks. Farm fiddling is killer miracle man and no more tears to name a few are great. Its all personal preference.

Oh no one mention "Party With the Animals". Great tune great solo. I like everything about that song. I guess it was a bonus song you could get on the No More Tears album.

I guess I will weight in on this great controversy. I think Jake has a little bit more melodic flavor to his solos. But I think Zakk hand's down beats him accuracy and technique.

I like both of them and have great respect for both. I think these conversation sometimes end up being a little juvenile. BUt hey it is all in good fun. I hope.

Didn't notice this was such an old thread.

hey , I'm a bit late but to me most of you missed the case of what's nice about zakk wylde. I was born in april 1990 so I heard pretty much every guitar legends one after the other. All of them have different tone due to money , years , skills , time to record and whatever I forget . My point is we all love gilmour or bb king for that soft controlled vibrato , that tasty bend etc to me zakk was all about wildness you know the lion screaming bend , the wide vibrato , the heavyness and loudness I need. He feels like a muscle car always on 300 bmp hahah

A good exemple is Hellraiser :

Anyway , pretty happy he's back with Ozzy if you ask me , they made gus g act like a lame version of him so at least bring back the real one
