Birth of "Speed Metal"

Post by Paul Wolfe »

I am wondering what you think is the original speed metal song or band...

The first true speed-metal double bass drum I remember hearing is Fast As A Shark by Accept on the Restless and Wild album which came out in June of 1982...

Is this the first speed metal song?

It depends what you call speed metal. Whether its Sweep picking, or Shred or what. For me, the first really really fast band, were Iron Maiden in 1981, then you obviously have had faster since with Yngwie etc. but i dont know, specify a bit more :)

I think speed metal origins from Deep Purple ... and possibly Motörhead

Speed metal.. Well it spawned definatly from Accept or around Accept. I think Motorhead as well both of those bands really set the thrash and speed metal revelation in motion!

Accept was definitely one of the pioneers. Not to forget early Metallica with Mr. Mustaine.

But I always thought that the speed part at the end of 'Revelation mother Earth' (Blizzard of Ozz) was a step in that direction as well. That was metal before metal even was born.

Anthrax and Motorhead rule! I think that Anthrax were more "speed metal" though.
