That's kind of like Queen's "Under Pressure" and Vanilla Ice's "Ice, Ice Baby".

Only difference between the two was that Vanilla's had one extra note in the bass line.(if I remember correctly!)

Good call Paul.

Virgin radio played both tracks back to back in September and they are a bit similar...UNDERSTATEMENT LOL

Just checked the thread Paul,

when i read this story i wasn't expecting the tunes to sound so similar. Of course maybe its a coincidence but its very suspicious. It wouldn't surprise me really.

I can't believe Joe hasn't sued them! Or has he...? It's way too close to be a coincidence, even in the same key and everything...

This kind of cases are not easy to win I guess.
I never heard that Satriani song, how well known is that song and how likely is it that these guys from Cold Play could ever heard it before? If one can prove that Cold Play indeed heard this Satriani song before maybe they have a case. And also that chord progression doesn't sound that un- familiar either, maybe there is another song that sounded like that even before Satriani composed his track? There are lots of songs with the same chord progressions. I think it still can be a coincidence but who knows, it will be interesting to see the outcome!

Acually you can't copyright a chord progression. Just a melody. That is why a lot of songs have the same kinds of chord progressions. As far as proving if coldplay ever heard the song before...All you have to do is listen to the comparison and it goes way beyong coincidence IMHO.

Patrick and Logan

the melody of the chorus is almost identical though. I have to admit that the loophole of the chords of a progression not being copyrightable is something that has gotten my mind a tickin with certain songs I want to jam to on my next album!

An interesting experiment would be to give 10 composers (unfamiliar with both songs) that chord progression and see with what melody they come up with.

That would be a neat little experiment! :)
