i think a lot of his popularity came down to his energy, charisma and crazy antics. if you take away the crazy wammy bar tricks, playing the guitar with his teeth etc. the music your left with is not any better (or worse) than that of his contemporaries. the notion that he was leagues ahead is daft IMO, stylisticaly/genericaly he was drasticly different and an inovator but so was clapton years before.

anyhow i dont want to get into a debate about whos best cos theres no answer to that... although if we're talking purely about technique Michael Angelo Batio would probably win hands down.

He was said to have had a HUGE willy LOL...

2 ladies who slept with him showed a plaster cast in the Sunday Times a few years back!! (just to keep things light :D )

So you're thinking about black dick again.

Let this go for three pages, but lets keep it clean. Its so far been a very good thread, lets not let silly things bring it down.

My opinion is this, Jimi Hendrix had incredible stage presence. I find that when playing on stage, being able to play well is the most important thing, but being able to have stage presence is also extremely important. Jimi had a stage presence like no other, he made people go, woah, wtf? While burning your guitar on stage is in reality, totally pointless and completely unrelated to the music, everyone associates it with him. Everyone goes, Hendrix burned his guitar on stage and it raises eye brows. thats what i mean by incredible stage presence.

However, that said, I also have a couple of issues with Jimi that bring my opinion of him down. I am not trying to swing this argument either way neither, because I do not really think polls are very valid because its all relative. If you ask 100 sweaty teenage kids they'll probably say that Fred Durst was a better singer than Robert Plant. So polls are really pointless... So, my issues with Hendrix are that I felt he let himself go. When the world really could of been his oyster he let it go and drowned himself in a life of luxuries while not really concentrating (imo) totally on his guitar. I wonder would Hendrix of made the progress he made initially later on in life, because he was so caught in a life of drugs and alcohol, i just wonder if his progress would of been hampered. My only other real issue was his tone. I felt around the time, there were guitarists who may well not have been as technically skilled, with a better tone. I found his tone nasal and while for him, it may of been what he was aiming for and trying to achieve, it just didn't work for me.

That said, I still believe he wrote numerous brilliant songs and thats my opinion on it. He wasnt the best guitarist of all time, but he was an excellent song writer and I cant argue with that. And his cover of All Along The Watchtower, i think will probably be listened to for 100's of years to come.

I have 2 sides to my enjoyment of rock.

Randy Rhoads is the exception in my idiology of a rock guitarist..he crafted his solos and approached his playing not like a traditional rock musician..so I draw an exception there...so

Re-Hendric
I love Hendrix and 1967/1968-1971. I find his playing/music blantantly passionate, sexual and very personal.

Yes I know to look at it in an anal manner there are out of tune moments because he was out of it..

I just think of William Blake

"the road od excess leads to the palace of wisdom"

Off to bed now another quote

"we love you all"

The parallel between Jimi Hendrix and Randy Rhoads, as seen through comparison, is fruitless. Polls are for politicians, not musicians.

Here is one similarity that strikes me. Jimi Hendrix was taken to England by the Animals bassist Chas Chandler, after playing with many different bands, to finally be heard by the world-at-large. Randy Rhoads was hired by Ozzy Osbourne, after being in Quiet Riot, to release albums that were than heard by a world audience.

Additionally, Jimi was a perfectionist in the recording studio as Randy was.

Their commonality was using the electric guitar as a paintbrush. Their tones (colors) were vast and imaginative. Jimi was in charge of his band and with it he composed many unique brilliant audio murals. Many times his compositions transcend his guitar playing. Randy was not in total control of the band. Yet, co-writing with Ozzy let him have some control over the final artistic work. Randy was the master team player. His vibrant lead guitar work added the finishing touch on those masterpieces we all discuss here.

So, as I have used painting as an analogy, may I ask: what is your favorite color?:D

Gotta agree with that as well, although I'm not a massive fan of his. Hendrix's music was very sexy indeed and when I get ready for a night on town, I put him on. Sort of gets me prepared for whatever may (or may not, LOL) come my way. It's sort of my power music, like Cher.

Some Hendrix tunes I really like are Cross Town Traffic, Dolly Dagger, and Stone Free.

I know I might get a boot thrown at me for this, but I think I like SRV's versions of Hendrix songs more than Hendrix's versions of his own songs, mainly for vocals though. Never could really like Hendrix's voice.

I was thinking about that comment you made regarding Randy feeling that to play guitar you must be able to play the blues. Red House by Hendrix is one of my all time favorite blues songs.

Speaking of blues, SRV was one of the best and he idolized Jimi, so the guy must have had some talent.

The admiration from a wide variety of musicians is really something else too.

Joe satriani said in a recent interview "when I am on stage 99 percent of the time I am thinking of Jimi Hendrix" Mr old Classical Guitar teacher Dr Martin Vishnick was a huge fan and was adamant he was a genius. Bernie Torme told me at the Guitar society "there hasn't been anything like him since"

And then you have people like Miles Davis and the Classical Violinist Nigel Kennedy who really admired Jimi.

On a related topic regarding the guitar playing of Prince, someone you would NEVER think was into his playing is Steve Vai...

Yesterday I read in the booklet in my Beethoven booklet that he was fascinated by Eastern philosophy and the Bagavitta!!

A cliche but variety IS the spice of life

Yeah for what Jimi did with the guitar back then was a big turn around in music and it had alot to do with the way music changed from rock to heavy rock/metal.So if Jimi hadn't of did this it could of been a different genre. For his style and 'technique' and stage presents it was a big fast forward and it brought the rock scene up to a new level. But for the time and putting him up against people from his period, i would say he was the best ..

i think his "out of tune" moments just enhance his music personaly. After all IMO the most basic principle you need to follow to create good music is the balance of continuity and dissonance. In fact that rule applies to all art forms :o

hendrix deffineatly had good control of that
