between 54 secs and 59 secs...any idea how I can do that? And does he do a harmonic after that bit? Or is it just a bend with extra muff?
I've said it before and I'll say it a million times.......CLIFF BURTON WAS A FUCKING GOD ON THE 4 STRING!!!!! My favorite of all time. I haven't busted out my Cliff 'Em All VHS in years so that brought a smile to my face and almost a tear to my eye!! As for your question.....How can you do that? PRACTICE YOUR ASS OFF!!!! Build up speed and finger stength. I play bass as well....actually I think I'm better at that than guitar .....and used to just sit there and bend and bend and bend the strings until my fingers damn near bled!!! Had a spotlight bass solo....AHH THE DAYZ.... played this mixof Anestisia/Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner and this thing I wrote. FUN STUFF!!! Cliff is a great teacher along with Steve Harris from Iron Maiden. Sorry I'm rambling....but the thing at the end is him just bending the shit out of it!!! The sound is all in his fingers....PEEZ......P

Ok I'll keep practising at it! Actually, when I broke my d-string I had been doing a lot of bending during a little solo I was making up. Maybe that's why
you know I actually noticed one day when watching myself playn in the mirror, that when I play fast, my fingering style is a bit like Cliff's. Without even knowing it haha.

Like myself.....picking hand is all fanned out with the pinky sticking out there like Randy. It's been that way forever but, I wasn't trying to be like him. Cliff was and still is great, his music is fantastic and so emotional, it was the best period of Metallica career with Burton. He was into classical music like Randy, also he liked southern rock and for example Misfits so various things. In my opinion there are a lot of musicians in the music world but only few of them has got that special thing which is called charisma. Also what`s important he was true rock`n`roller- just look on Cliff`em All...

Yea there really is no doubt in my mind that Burton was the greatest metal bassist ever, and Metallica thought the same thing. The entire band relocated from LA to SF just so that Burton would join the band.
But not only do I admire Cliff for his comitment and loalty. He was very hesitant to join Metallica becuase he was in the band Trauma at the time Lars and James asked him to join. Thats really great stuff. Trauma was nowhere near matching the metal fury and potiential that Metallica had back in early 83, and for Burton to stick with Trauma over the originators of thrash for a little while before finnally agreeing is something that i really like about that guy. Something that I kinda wish i could say the same for Randy...
The fact is Burton was exceptional, and if you really wanna get the downlow and everything on his time in Metallica you should go buy Cliff Em All like someone already said. A great DVD collection honoring Cliff. And if you want just audio you should pick up Kill Em All, Metallica's first album in 1983. There is a pretty killer bass solo as track 5 on the album that Cliff really ripps on. If you havnt already heard Cliff, you should buy that stuff NOW!!!

I have a few friends who play Bass and I am surprised nobody ever thinks of Clif as an influence.

Cliff Burton was untouchable for what he could do on a Bass Guitar, I was lucky enough to see him twice in the '80's and video can not match what it was like to see it live....the man was unbelievable and at the same time had an attitude of just another cool dude, not a super star or anything, the "Im just the guy on the stage and your in the audience but we are both the same, we are all fans"....oh well you know what I mean....He was awesome !!!!!
