Re: would gibson ever do this
Gibson have made 'fenderish' single coils. They used them in Melody Maker guitars, the Nighthawk, etc.
P90's are single coils too, but are constructed differently, and have a lower, wider coil than Fender pickups (and approx 20% more windings), so therefore sound very different. The wider coil gives a fatter, dirtier tone. Fender single coils have magnets for pole pieces, the P90's have screw polepieces, with two humbucker type magnets providing the magnetic field.

Actually in the early 90's Gibson has a les paul studio lite that has hum-single-hum pickup configuration.
Insert something witty here.

Scott Grove has quite a bit of attitude (and he likes to consider himself 'special', shall we say) but he's got a LOT of guitars and he demos them for us to get a an idea...
I always liked his video comparing maple fingerboards to rosewood fingerboards... I prefer maple, by the way... not sure why, but I do...

Never liked maple, for the same reason you don't like rosewood.
However, I'm looking to possibly build a tele/esquire in a distant future
which will have a maple neck
