Bonhams Sells Queen Icon Costume

Post by andyanderson »

The black and white harlequin state costume Freddy Mercury rocked in the 70s was carrying a presale estimate of $12,000 to $15,000 at a Bonhams Entertainment Memorabilia event. However, bidders were fierce during the London sale, and pushed the price up to more than double the estimate and selling for nearly $35,000.

The white, leather ballet shoes Mercury wore during a free and legendary Hyde Park performance in 1976, which drew a crowd of more than 150,000 people, sold for nearly $6,000 to an overseas internet bidder, more than doubling the pre-sale estimate of $1,000 to $3,000.

Director of the Entertainment Memorabilia department, Stephanie Connell said, “We are delighted Freddie Mercury’s stage costume, which is such an important and instantly recognisable piece of rock and roll history, achieved almost three times its low estimate in our Entertainment Memorabilia sale. A packed room, with frenzied internet bidders from around the globe made for an extremely exciting sale. We are looking forward to our forthcoming sales in 2012 both in the US and UK,” Art Daily reported.

Other items included in the Popular Music Memorabilia sale included a 1970s Roger Waters Pink Floyd Fender Precision bass guitar, a Michael Jackson jacket, and the Sonic Youth t-shirt Kurt Cobain worn during the last Nirvana concert.
