Sampling should be illegal

Post by fraroc »

You know what I'm talking about. All these modern day rappers stealing good music and mixing it with lyrics about getting pussy and smoking crack and calling it their own. One rap song crossed the fucking line, I listened to it one day and I could hear "Portrait (He Knew)" by Kansas being played behind a simple beat and lyrics about drinking, having sex and partying.

You can't just steal pure talent to use in a "song" about getting pussy and smoking weed! Its just wrong and it should be outlawed. Who's with me!?

As with anything in the realm of art, some artists have taste and make it work and some "artists" are just hacks that should go get a real job...

There are some good songs that use sampling, but generally speaking I'm opposed to it. I've never really understood the point, much like DJ'ing I suppose.

What does bother me is that i'm not sure the artist receives any royalty or even recognition for use of the track. Although i can only speak from similar experiences of sampling in the film world, having seen a sound designer literally rip off 'the sixth sense'.

But who cares, the music industry is broken. Just something we have to accept.

I remember reading an interview with Eddie Van Halen when this subject came up. Ed said he was listening to the radio in his car when Tone Loc's Wild Thing came on and he found himself enjoying it.

"Nice drum and guitar parts... wait that's me and Al!"

Apparently Jamie' Crying was sampled without Ed being aware of it.
