Started this thread on a swedish music/guitar forum

The idea is to post a clip of a drummer and then we'll hopefully
get into a great debate about drumming
Let's get started then ...
Canadian metal drummer Etienne Gallo
-
Mike Portnoy with Avenged Sevenfold - Almost Easy
original A7X drummer 'The Rev' recording the above song

Vemodets arkitektur
Not as subtle and classy as Martin Lopez, but good nonetheless.
Yeah, Hellhammer is pretty damn awesome
would've linked to Mayhems Live in Marseille gig, but I'm not
a fan of the drumsound on that concert

Being a guitar player, I am way to cerebral to discuss drummers, but
this clip seems to feature decent playing (for drums

)
Oh, and
this guy was good in his time...
Let me know if I'm way off base for this thread.

Wow, never heard any of those modern metal drummers before but i actually liked most all of what i just listened to. To sum up my opinions;
Etienne Gallo - This guy is truly a drummers drummer. Very ambidextrous. I'm not totally taken with it though. I love what he's doing with his left hand, very fluid technique in keeping the beat, delicate and aggressive. I'm not keen on the tom rolls though, and some of it is a little too sporadic for my taste.
Martin Lopez - Love what he's doing on ghost of perdition. Some jazzy influences mixed in, i like my drumming with a bit of swagger and he's got loads.
Hellhammer - Credit is due for maintaining a high level of intensity while still introducing some fairly mainstream beats. What i mean is, its heavy, but easy to listen to at the same time. A lot of guys in that genre would just go for noise.
As for John Bonham, well i've never been a huge fan, he just never appealed somehow, despite his obvious talent.

I often forget about him, but I'm a huge fan of Bill Ward. He always has a way of surprising me. War Pigs is one moment that always comes to mind.

Ed: If i had a dream band, i think bill would be drumming.

Ok, so, then I give you ... Yanic Bercier

I'm amazed by the stamina he has for the double bass drum beats

I can kinda agree on that point. There's many drummers
from that era that grooves alot better than Bonzo...

Sacrilege I know!
In all seriousness, John Bonham is a pretty good drummer. He just never really grabs me.
As far as older drummers go I'm pretty big on Cozy Powell, Ginger Baker and of course Bill Ward. Of course it all depends what you consider old.

I've never heard of the guy before, but if i was going to put together a modern metal outfit I'd want a drummer like him. Sure he's got speed and stamina, but style as well.

I usually don't pay much attention to the drummer, but I really like James Kottak of Scorpions. Definitely one of the best drummers for showmanship! I always think of Animal from The Muppets whenever I watch him perform.
His solo on the current Farewell Tour (dubbed "Kottak Attack") is especially cool. He goes through various themes of key Scorpions albums over the years, with entertaining video of him in the background based on the album covers to reflect those themes as he's playing though them, then does his main solo:
