I can't forget the great Phil Lynott...never did anything very flashy but, held the bottom line down exeptionally well. If I had to pick one it would be Cliff Burton. He is my Randy Rhoads when it comes to bass players.

The reason I don't like Cliff is because he treats the bass like a guitar.

James Jamerson - the Motown Funk Brother bassist. That is him on nearly all Motown from the mid 60's on. Listen to the Jackson 5 "Darling Dear" - it will bring tears to your eyes:

A white brother attempting it:

James was called "The Hook" for his one finger technique.

Add to my list:

Paul McCartney: The whole Revolver album.

Gene Simmons (yes, just listen to the Destroyer album. Totally underrated player and singer for that matter).

John Paul Jones - "Ramble On" 'nuff said.

Bob Daisley - Incredible talent. Remember back when Ozzy had a band called "The Blizzard of Ozz"? There is a reason why Ozzy albums without Bob by and large suck. He and Lee Kerslake were meant to play together. Those two lock in like no other.

John Entwhistle - "The Real Me". Ouch!!

Every musician should be familiar with James Jamerson. His sense of groove and melody are astonishing.

Very cool he's from your home state. Check out the movie "Standing In The Shadows of Motown" sometime. I bought it on VHS at The Dollar Tree a couple of years back not even knowing what it was about. One of my favorites now!

BOOTSY BABY BUBBAH!!! and the other Parliament/Funkadelic bassists.
Put on "One Nation Under A Groove" and listen to "Grooveallegiance" and your world will change.
OR Bootsy's 1st solo album "Stretching Out". I listened to that album for 6 months straight, nothing else, and jammed bass to it to break up my guitar playing.

Funkadelic music is something every guitarist worth his salt should have in his collection. You wanna learn rhythm? Reeeaaaal rhythm? Go get an album and get to work!!

Billy Cox is an EXTREMELY underrated bassist as well. Put on "First Rays Of The New Rising Sun". Down and dirty all the way.
