Ultimate Rhoads

Has anyone read "The Principles Of Correct Practice For Guitar" by Jamey Andreas? his site has an interesting mission statement: "To enable anyone to play the guitar, regardless of age or background. Also, to enable anyone who plays to advance to their next level of ability.

This is done by teaching the student how to practice effectively, using "The Principles of Correct Practice For Guitar."

Sounds good, but a lot of the excerpts I've read sound like Eastern Mysticism mumbo jumbo... "You MUST do it THIS way or you will fail." I've never been good with that type of instruction.

Anyway, I was considering getting this book, but wanted to have an opinion or two first.

Okay, so I went ahead and got it. So far I like it. It's about being aware of what you are doing when you practice. Sort of a treatise on paying attention to every physical aspect of what you do while practicing.

I'm always open to new ideas, so I'll see if it helps...

paul, i gather that you are a serious student but i was wondering if you play with other musicians or is it a solitary pursuit?

Oh, it's definitely a solitary pursuit, especially these days.

I've never really wanted to be in a band or on a stage, I just like to play and learn about the subject. I play for my kids sometimes, they hear a song and ask if I can play it, but that's the extent of my performing.

On a side note, last night I was watching a video of a Judas Priest concert from 1982, when Breaking the Law came on, my 5-year-old started dancing and playing air guitar! He wanted to hear it again, so I repeated it and my 2-year-old joined in, running in circles, singing "beaking the law" as loud as he could, over and over... they had me get out my guitar to play along and this lasted a good half hour, my wife videotaped it for blackmail at a later date. I fear I have corrupted my children

I have had PM's in the past about how I never contribute to Guitar playing related threads. I have been waiting to see another guitar thread so I can let everyone know I am Drummer so I only wish I could talk with the clever people .

I guess this wont be the last time I mention it though!

I love the story about you playing guitar for your kids, I can tell you now that nothing is more embarasing than being caught playing 'Air drums'

Now that does sound worse!! air drumming (in it's wildest forms) looks like someone being attacked by invisible Bee's!!

Hey Trigger,
I'm a guitarplayer myself but I play a lot of air-drums just to kick our drummer to get from his ass
and beat the hell out of his kit! I got some T. A. signature sticks for him now and it is really an improvement, much more punch now!
Never play air-guitar though, oke sometimes but not much. I rather play air-drums!

Trigger, You should try and do an "air-band". Simulate each instrument. People might think you have something like turrets syndrome.

Back in the '80's the band Journey did one of their videos as an air and, it was rather stupid looking as I recall.
