Dreaming music and guitars??!! :)

Post by Cpt Matt Sparrow »

Does anyone else do what the thread title says?

The other night I woke up thinking about the next guitar on my hit list after I dream of it, it was vivid too, the smell of the wood the tone etc! I dropped off with the look of it in my mind and slept well...:)

Also in the day, especially when socialising, I can't ever get what I am currently working on out of my head, whether it be a composition or a piece I am currently practising!! LOL

It is great in situations that are boring. You just go into your mind and begin practising scales and stuff!

i have only ever had one dream about guitars that i remember.

I bought a Jeff Beck custom guitar. It was white with a tortoiseshell scratchplate and it had a zero fret... (obviously not factory speck LMAO)

but you had to actualy fret the zero fret to play open strings

I remember thinking "why have i spent £800 on this crazy tool?"

What is funny with 'GAS' as many call it, is it is cured once the guitar or amp is aquired but a few months later the old feelings of yearning for your next piece of gear occur.

I find on a very serious note, that so much practice can be achieved away from the guitar. It is one of those myths that is has to be a strenous physical work out to achieve success,

often on a long plane or train journey without access to a guitar I have looked through a score and imagined the passages in my head, and the feeling of my fingers fretting the new shapes. When I have then tried these sections in actuality, often they are then possible.

By dreaming I meant also day dreaming, and I suppose what many call positive visualisation, except it is not a conscious choice. The pieces and practice go on all day long and into the night even when I am doing other activities. In the words of Viscount de Valmont "It is beyond my control!" :)

thats pretty cool that you can just think of something and dream of it and then play it.

It's not just guitar you can do it with, it works with many things that use muscle memory. Also, it isn't as easy as a quick dream, and then hey presto! a brand new piece comes out the guitar :)

The useful thing about practising away from the instrument, is that you can get things in order first fingering wise. What happens often with practising, is people instead of going through the piece the first time trying to get everything correct, rush through, and their musicle memory remembers all the mistakes, so then you have the pain of having not only learn the piece , but also to weed out the mistakes.

Trust Cpt Matt, and try practising scales and exercises in the your minds eye and then try them on the guitar in actuality later on.

Demon, knowing you, you will try it and then say you tried it and what a load of rubbish it hasn't worked! :) :)
