Mode lesson?
I'm currently trying to figure out the best way to teach the concept of the modes to my son... would anyone like me to post a lesson once I figure out a good explanation?

Modes
There is a really cool concept controlling the modes that you should try to address. I call it the "Spiral Into Madness". It concerns the arrangement of the modes according to how "bright" or "dark" they sound in relation to one another. Are you already aware of this concept?

Modes Are Cool
If you can, try to relate certain guitar players to the mode they use most often. That always strikes the right chord (no pun intended) with guitar players. For example, Satriani uses Lydian a lot...

Satriani & Modes
I did see that video on youtube.com. He uses what is called pitch axis theory to stay on the same root note but surfs through different scales. If someone is good at explaining this theory please help. I read the explanation on wikipedia but sort of got lost on how one chooses the chords that are used with pitch axis theory.

Okay, I wrote this lesson and then was referred to Modal Jams and Theory by Dave Celentano for more ideas. While looking at this text, I also remembered Frank Gambale's Modes: No More Mysteries DVD as well as his book on improvisation. So I am re-reading these texts as well to glean information.
I think I will start by putting up a lesson about what modes are and how thay are formed, and then put up another lesson about how they are used in songs. Then maybe also a lesson on how to create chord progressions and apply the modes to get teh color desired for the mood of the piece.
All in all, this is a big subject and I think it should be treated well... I'm still working on harmonizing the solo to Look in Any Window using Diatonic 5ths.. I haven't forgotten that one.
