Sharing Guitar Licks
As a teacher I am always searching for licks that are cool to play. Randy's are definitely first rate. What guitar licks do "you" consider the most important to know on a guitar?

Next Question
O.K. Maybe I should make the first move. One of the most important licks I teach my students is a blues lick that bends the fourth (say at the 7th fret on the third string) and uses the fifth, tonic and minor seventh in succession. You could say this lick is at the heart of blues. Randy could blister this lick easily at the 14th fret (i.e., Mr. Crowley)...

Like so?

Randy liked to use such "Chuck Berry" riffs a lot in both Quiet Riot and Ozzy. In situations like Mr. Crowley or Paranoid it was often like this:
|---------5------------------5-|----------|
|------5-----8---5-------5----|-8--5----|
|-7b9---------------7b9------|----------|
|------------------------------|----------|
|------------------------------|----------|

Both versions are very useful in rapid-fire solos.

Excellent!
Absolutely right. That lick is the backbone of just about any guitar player's repertoire. Excellent diagram. That is only the tip of the iceberg as we all know...

Beyond Pentatonic
After reading the article of Randy's Lost Guitar Lesson in Guitar World I wanted to say something about his approach to evolving this pentatonic blues lick.

Randy combined scales to create new licks. By adding in the Aeolian mode he was able to create this "Over The Mountain" lick. (This is only half of the lick.)

Now that's cool...
