This is the way I learned "Over the Mountain" 17 y

I just found an old transcription I made for OTM because I play it so different than most people. I know of one other guy that plays it this way.

NOTE: PLAY THIS TRANSCRIPTION WITH THE GUITAR IN STANDARD A440 (E) TUNING.

We've added a set of Ozzy tunes to what our band is doing. We want to do Over the Mountain but the tuning and positioning is really hard to pin down. This zip file would be cool but my free trial for Win Zip has expired so I can't open it to see what you have. Like I told my bass player just a few minutes ago, "How did Randy do it"? That's what I want to know.
Don't worry! They can't do this to you.

And if they do......

Who cares?

Go get a program called 7-Zip. it is free and works on all kinds of compression types.

I believe that Randy played it in Eb tuning but the part that pedals on D with the 3 rapid intervals is not Randy'esque at all but in standard tuning it becomes a classic Rhoads signature riff.

That's the argument in the band. I want to tune the guitar down to "D" and play the riff in the open position. The part of the song with those intervals just before the solo become very smooth and easy to play. The entire song just makes more sense. The bass player does not want to play it there and the rest of the band is sick of me any my tuning arguments. The rest of the album in on a Eb guitar and everybody else plays it there.

It took me almost a year of bitching to play song like Symptom of the Universe on a guitar tuned to C# in the 3rd position. That's the way Iommi did it. I had to sit everybody down with some good clear video that showed his positioning on the neck before they believed me. I haven't found that yet with this song.

Thanks for the 7-Zip recommendation. It worked fine. I just don't have the program to open the xxxx.tab file.

I'm guessing the .tab is a powertab file? The program is freeware; you can get it here http://www.power-tab.net/

I messed around with the file and opened a TXT file then opened it into that. It opened that way.

I'm still not comfortable with the accuracy of it. Especially the positioning. I'm still in search of the "Right" way to play it. Knowing the notes is one thing but I've learned that you can play the same combination of notes 50 different ways and when it comes to the technique that you apply to the position on the neck that will make the song right.

Use the Edward Van Halen technique - "If it sounds good, it is good."

As long as you play the right notes, it doesn't matter where you play them, your audience will not know the difference. If your goal is to be in a band and have an audience, you have to let go of perfection in order to move ahead sometimes.

Paul, that is great advice!

Knowing is important, but not as important as feeling the right thing!!

That all is important. I think some of what Eddie was referring to is playing original music. There's no use beating yourself up over your own stuff.

I believe that the location of the notes and where they are played go hand in hand with the technique a bit. They will make the tone. Then when playing for accuracy it does become important to play it right. We are a tribute band and unless we do it as close to that 100% mark then we've fallen short of what we set out to do. Where else will you start to cut corners if you let the music slack?

Okay point taken. I see what you mean.

I have a good idea. Why don't you contact The Tribute band Rhoads To Ozz?
Jeff the bass player runs their myspace site and the accuracy of the Ozzy material is probably one of the best out there. Randy Chambers is the Guitar player.

For studio album reproduction, Chelsea Constable is the best in my opinion, but the two best live bands and live Randy Tribute Guitarists are Randy Chambers from Rhoads To Ozz; and also another great band (also great player) is Diary Of Ozz!

The guys from Rhoads to Ozz are very friendly and helpful!
