I always thought that the main rival during Randy`s life was Eddie Van Halen, although there were many guitarists around too many to mention.
One thing i wasn't aware of was how far back Yngwie Malmsteen actually went, first with his " POwerhouse" Demos around 1978! ( at 15 years old!)

And still in Sweden with the same band apparently this was filmed in 1982 at 18 ! ....

And here in 1982 aged 18 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zjHnR0CEqxE
He finally came to the us in 1983.
Obviously Randy was playing large venues and arenas by 1981 but it seems Malmsteens playing was developed by 18. The other thing is that Malmsteen was present at the Randy Rhoads memorial thing , wrote an afterword in the book and also did a cover of Mr Crowley. I suppose Malmsteen mustve been aware of Randy back in 1981 but the weird thing is i cant find any evidence that Malmsteen was actually influenced by Randy , since he always claimed it was Ritchie Blackmore that influenced him with the classical side of things.
Bit confusing.But interesting........

It's regret, i think that really is the worst kind of pain, yeah guilt is bad, and sadness is bad, but regret is the sickly combination of both.

Re: Randy and Yngwie
Yngwie never sounded anything like Randy...
Randy took classical concepts and melded them with the blues and rock to create his style.
Yngwie seems to have taken classical violin music and used that as his template with Paganini being his main focus.
Blackmore was definitely an influence on him. I remember seeing pictures of him in the Alcatrazz days that looked like he stole Ritchie's look the way Kingdom Come was "inspired" by Led Zeppelin.
I don't think Randy's playing had any influence on Yngwie at all. I think he simply appreciated what Randy did.

I have just read the unauthorized yngwie´s biography, very recommended book . It talk about his first steps in music. He has a devotion about classic since he was a child.

Re: Randy and Yngwie
Yeah, classical music is about the only thing Randy and Yngwie had in common.
Yngwie to a more extreme degree though.
