The Blizzard of Ozz Band ( including Bob and Lee)

Post by mojopin70 »

Hello i thought i would start a top about the Blizzard of Ozz Band.

( including Randy Rhoads , Bob Daisley and Lee Kerslake)

I think that Bob is too fair when talking about the writing of those albums , he is a very modest chap, but we all know he wrote 95% of the lyrics arranged the songs even wrote vocal melodies for Ozzy at times, mentored Randy and brought the best out of Lee...

We should celebrate this and embrace it.

The albums are timeless and i never get bored of hearing those basslines, and that Rhythm section on record, i believe it was into the 50`s in terms of auditioning drummers when they finally found Lee , it must have been amazing when Randy and Bob looked at each other when they finally heard his playing ( the last drummer they auditioned).

SIgh* Now we know that Aldridge was a good live musician but can look back other Ozzy records and to Bark at the Moon for example ( Bob on bass) and realise it wasnt the same as Bob and Lee the magical Rhythm section....

I cant think of many bass players that make me hum their basslines , John Paul Jones would be one...but you know thats the sign of a true pure bass player...

What do you all think?
"If I knew then what I know now, I'd have made five albums with them" Ozzy Osbourne

It's regret, i think that really is the worst kind of pain, yeah guilt is bad, and sadness is bad, but regret is the sickly combination of both.

I think Ozzy should get MUCH more credit for writing the vocal melodies. Iommi has said Ozzy was brilliant at vocal melodies and could always find a way to make something fit. He also (in Sabbath) added the concept for songs as he did his vocal scratch tracks, which Geezer would then formulate words around. Not always, but often.

I think Bob probably did a fair bit of arranging the parts Randy came up with ("Move this here; do that progression 6 times instead of 8; that part is too good for that section, let's work up a song around that...")

'Course we'll never know, but that'd be my guess.

Yeah i think thats fair to say maybe in sabbath ...when they were doing the writing sessions at Monnow for Blizzard and Diary Ozzy spent most of his time on the floor drunk and Randy and Bob would have to wake him up when they were writing just to get any work done at all !

Ozzy's got an image to live up to. I'm sure a LOT of the stories we have heard over the years were exaggerated to some extent.

Well the image isn't a good one if that... If you remember the 'Don't Blame Me' video. when Ozzy is in the studio he is at his worst. Doing the recording of the 'No More Tears' album. Struggling to do his lyrics line by line. then he's stoned pissed and blubbering wreck. so i could imagine during his sabbath and early Ozzy days he would of been worse. Yeah Ozzy does get bad press, and on a good day he can deliver the goods. Ozzy has always had good people around him, good guitarists and lyricists etc. So the hard part is done for him he just needs to get it done in the studio and live on stage.

True.

I've never seen Don't Blame Me, so I can't comment on that. I just think that people get the impression Ozzy was wasted 24/7 and never had a sober moment to contribute and I just don't believe that to be true.

Paul try and get a copy of the 'How Black Was Our Sabbath' book. If you haven't already seen this one. It's a good all round perspective of how Ozzy went from rags to riches and an honest view from his fellow crew mates PA's etc. One of the better no bullshit books. Bill Ward and Ozzy give it a big thumbs up when it came out.

Paul i found it on youtube for ya check it out it's a good one if you haven't seen this.

Thanks for that link. Ozzy kinda makes my point there in the beginning about playing a part in an image. By the way, he came across as vary coherent there in the late '80's.
