The Real Randy Audition???

yeah both Randy & Ozzy said Randy was just tuning up & got the gig.
I know my Les Paul- it's usually in tune for days to weeks even w/ banging around in the case & takes me about 5 seconds tops to tune the G string & run E-G-C just to make sure & bend a few notes...

so was Randy actually really tuning up or more like riffing Laughing gas & licks/scales to make sure (which we all know- & if ya don't you tube it compared to "spotlight" solo)????? here's both links.

my guess is he was playing something from the 4 minute mark on of Laughing Gas or what we all now know as the 'lost" spotlight solo but not as refined.

just my guess..

for the new Rhoads fans- do yourself a favor & go get Quiet Riot the Randy Rhoads years- you will hear a lot of Ozzy Blizzard stuff on there.

I think I recall Dana Strum mention he told Randy to play something from his spotlight solo, the audition was just getting under way no doubt about that. But the spotlight solo would have been a good way to get the fingers moving before the real audition got under way.

I think it's more like the soundcheck, the first 2 runs that he does, I would've been sold after hearing that. I've never heard anyone else do that.

The truthful story from Dana regarding the Randy audition is in the newest Guitar World. I found it quite intriging. The story was taken from the new Randy Rhoads coffee table book that is to be released soon through Guitarworld's website, along with Ron Sobol's Quiet Riot book and DVD. They are both going to be $100.00 each or $150.00 for the set. That's the price of paying for another box set. :-D The Randy Rhoads book is supposed to have amazing never-before-seen photos and it will be a whopping 400 pages!

Frank Santa Cruz has said that Randy tuning his guitar was much like the soundcheck video... no offense to Dana Strum, but I find it hard to believe Randy didn't notice he was alone in the studio when Dan left with Ozzy... then again, I wasn't there.

All very interesting but the fact remains that Ozzy returned to the UK WITHOUT Randy. Jet Records or more to the point, David Arden, who was managing Ozzy at the time on behalf of his father, wanted a UK based band and had to be persuaded to fly Randy to the UK AFTER several other more established guitarists refused to work with Ozzy.

Very true. Ozzy was a drunk and far from being a sure thing for a record company to back... The management wanted to insure a solid band by using known commodities rather than unknowns.

Ozzy had a drummer and guitarist when Daisley turned up at Ozzy's house, the first thing Daisley said after jamming with them was, get rid of them, and Ozzy did, that day. Stuck for a guitarist first and foremost, that was when Ozzy mentioned "this guy" back in the US. David Arden had to be pleaded with to fly him out, he didn't want too. But then, he would have also realised that because just about everyone else refused to work with Ozzy at that point, even Daisley was told not too, but against his better judgement did. Lee Kerslake didn't come into the band until two weeks before recording started for Blizzard.

I had heard the story in the above post before on here I think. It makes you wonder if Randy really ever had the gig until Ozzy actually flew him over. Which is kind of what I would expect from Ozzy in his F'ed up days.

What I have never heard is a communication time line from the "you got the gig" until they actually said come on over. Did Randy have constant communication or was he left hanging for a good bit not knowing anything for sure until they sent for him?

Apparently he told Randy he had the gig at the audition, and then said he'd be in touch in a week, and when he got in touch and told Randy that he was going to the UK and wanted Randy to come, it was Randy who said something to the effect..."Oh no, I can't leave now, with everything thats going on, and besides I've got a cold ...I'm not real well...." Ozzy said he'd be back in contact again in a couple of weeks.......and was...

From everything that I know I don't think Randy really wanted the job......it seems like if it hadn't been for his mother, he wouldn't have even gone to the audition, and certainly not to the UK.

I'd say Ozzy wasn't too sure about whether he'd see Randy again either, he wouldn't have bothered getting in any other guitarists if he was 100% sure Randy was going to join the band, unless he just wanted a guitarist to jam with in the mean time....

I honestly think Randy got the job because nobody else that was really good was interested after hearing about Ozzy being booted from Sabbath, and no doubt hearing about the condition he was in.........

So for quite some time, once Randy arrived in the UK, the band was basically a three piece writing all the music and lyrics for the first album......with a revolving door through which came dozens of drummers.....until they were about to hire a session drummer for the recording, but Lee walk through the door as the last drummer to audition and solved that problem.

Ozzy should thank his lucky stars for the lineup he had then, had it been without Randy and Bob, god knows what the first couple of albums would have been like.
