Interesting read!
I wonder how much the tape on the back of his guitars affected the tone?
Also - When did Randy fly on the Concorde jet?
Lastly - I wonder what happened to those other 4 guitars that were being made for him before he died?

Thanks for posting up that link very interesting read.

I have always said that the tape was put on his white V to protect the body from getting buckle rash and scratched from his studs on his vest and belt etc. The argument goes onto saying it was blacked out to the crowd on the opening number. The same reason his white cabs had the edges covered in black gaffa tape. So why is his black jackson covered in tape in the same style with the top edge of the guitar protected with tape. ?. I think my theory was correct all the time. The white cabs i can understand, but as we can see his spring and trem cavity plate isn't covered and the back of the neck isn't covered. So i think that theory has been blown out the water.

I agree with you 100%. If you look closely at some pictures of his PDV he has tape on it also. You can see it in the New Mexico video during MR Crowley.
I was a Roadie for 10 years and I would see guitarist doing the same thing if they wore studded belts.

I had a studded vest once on a show (see my profile pic) but I taped the studs on my vest that were grinding against my guitar, cause I would not want to mess with tape on my gibson! I dont know what effect it has if you tape your guitar, how it would look if you took it back off..

I agree with Shaun's estimation. Buckle rash was the first thing that came to mind when I saw the tape.
Seeing the Black Jack treated in the same manner more or less confirms this.
I missed seeing Randy by a week and a half, so, I'm uncertain how the show would have opened, I would think the focus would have been on the drum riser where Ozzy would appear.
Both Randy and Rudy are standing behind a portcullis in darkness already. Judging by the 'rising gate' clip from the ET footage, it appears Randy's guitar is already facing front. Would he have had enough room behind the gate to flip it?
It's not as though there is a bang and flash of smoke at stage left and right and Rhoads and Sarzo magically appear...from what we see in the New Mexico footage, it looks like they more or less saunter out to the front of the stage and wait for Ozzy to finish pacing about with his mirror cross and lose the jacket so they can get the party started.
Nice to see the Black Jack once again, as it is the rarest bird of the four. Must have been a treat to have been in that room!

Firstly, awesome article! Of any axes any artist has ever used, Randy had the coolest next to EVH.
Do they print this magazine? I read the digital copy but would love to get my hands on a real print, if anyone would be able to help or show where I can get it. I'm not sure if anywhere here in Australia gets it.
Without knowing the 'All Black' theory that Randy taped the guitar so the white paint wouldn't show, the most obvious and most certain guess would be to prevent Buckle Rash for sure. Having tape on the black V pretty much confirms this, since he didn't open the show with it.
Cool reference pics though, if anyone wants to have a crack at making a replica...

p.s. this black screen reply format sucks......

Premiere Guitar magazine has put up 20 pics of Randy's original Concordes online. Never saw pics of them taking specs off the black one before, wonder if Jackson's planning a reissue of it too? Maybe that one will only be $8K since they don't have to put the duct tape on it.

There's also a good in-depth interview with Mike Shannon:

For those interested, the physical edition of this issue has hit the newsstands on the east coast today.
I snagged my copy at Barnes & Noble.

These are very interesting pictures, with specs!!! Are there any pictures of the back of Sandoval V...? Don“t remember Randy having any duct-tape stucked on the backside of that guitar... ?
