Think About It...

Sitting here this evening wondering why there is such limited EVERYTHING when concerning Randy Rhoads. Started thinking that since he was such a prolific riff master and writer that there is a strong chance he had another handful of riffs and maybe even tunes in the can before he died.
Then I started wondering why Bob is so weird about the Grail tapes. Is there maybe a chance that some of Randy's riffs were used on BATM or maybe even Ultimate Sin? Think about it, if Bob released the tapes and there were riffs representative of some of those Ozzy tunes from 83-86, then the Rhoads family would be chasing Bob and also Ozzy down the street all the way to the courthouse. Bob isn't incredibly wealthy either, so maybe he's worried he'll lose some ground on royalties he's already received.
I'm really curious to hear the riffs Jake had PREVIOUS to joining Ozzy. I just really think the solo for So Tired is definitely Randy. Especially the last run of the solo. It sounds very similar to the last part of the GTR solo.
Even the main riff from the song The Ultimate Sin sounds like Randy. You're No Different has a similar feel to Revelation Mother Earth.
I don't know, something tells me Bob is a little worried about releasing the tapes.

Also, I find it really weird that Quiet Riot (basically a club band at the time) has more video footage of Randy performing than two years of touring with a huge act/production like Ozzy was.

Then again, maybe Jake was just a big Randy fan, and Bob knew how to bring that playing style and writing style out of him.
I guess we'll never know.
But, in my opinion, Randy definitely had a bunch of solid riffs and tunes in the can before he died. I'd guarantee it.

Why are they being weird about giving us all of his extended outro studio solos anyways? And if they do, they don't give the whole thing? If it's just random soloing, then fine, but if there are riffs that were used for future material, then, maybe -???-

Randy influenced Jake. Brad, Bernie and Jake probably all had tapes. That's probably how they lost some.
Andrew - Agreed. Kevin was very astute to record (thank the maker) live shows. They should be released officially. I can't think of anyone who played with that level of skill and passion. I love Edward V, he wrote great songs, solos and a totally great band chemistry. But Randy had this melody that was familiar, simple but complex. When Randy was alive, I admit that I didn't totally realize his contribution until he died (I was young). Then I realized, "Randy Rhoads, Ozzy's guitarist died" (I heard it on the radio that day). There is an absence that I still feel to this day...

Agreed! Randy was not just a killer guitarist but a musician also. I wish we had a little more material from him. Can you imagine what the next disc would have sounded like.

The riff during so tired after ozzy sings " your not with me tonight" sounds so much like a riff Randy would do. I believe that small part may have been his and maybe that's why bob said he inspired it.

Well, I think there probably was some pressure on Jake to emulate certain parts of Randy's style. I'm sure Ozzy wanted to keep a sound and vibe that was working for him. He was gaining a great deal of popularity at the time, so why mess with success?
You notice this with all of Ozzy's guitarists IMO. I always felt the pinch harmonic thing Zakk did was partially due to Jake's use of them, though Jake didn't do it as much. I could hear similarity between the two. Even now, Gus adopted a bit of Zakk on the new record. On the Firewind stuff, he was a bit more of a neo-classical shred weenie...

If you listen to Randy live you can hear pinch Harmonics a lot.

i don't think Jake sounds anything like Randy. They've all said there was NOTHING left over, just some possible outtakes of a couple of the 8 songs. They barely had time to write and record Diary.

It sure does. I have always thought that Randy wrote much of it. Its just too similar to Randy's style and too good to be Jake.
With another band in the same situation, I wonder if Bon Scott wrote the vocals for the Back in Black album. I sounds totally different than any of Brian Johnson's other singing.
And Dave Mustaine claims that most of the Master of Puppets songs were started when he was in the band and that he wrote much of it.
It all makes sense that these musicians had riffs, vocal lines, and melodies around that were snatched up for subsequent recordings. Things dont just vanish the day they die.

I agree with all of these comments. There was several months between when Diary was released and when Randy died, and he was probably (if anything) writing more than ever because of his uncertain future.
I definitely agree with the statement about So Tired ("you're not with me tonight"). Even the verses of that tune sound like Randy.
BATM definitely sounds like a Randy riff. BATM (the album) sounds like a continuation of DOAMM (with the dark-theme stuff). Ultimate Sin was different cause it had a pop-element to it. But BATM, yeah I definitely think there is a lot of riffs on those tapes that Bob piggy-backed off of.

just a thought...maybe ozzy told jake hey listen to this....idk gtr etc....and then told jake keep it in this style but make it your own?until something shows up i dont "THINK" anything is out there as far as early ideas that wound up on batm. randy's ideas anyway...
