Randy and Mxr
Okay guys, we all know that Randy was a big mxr user just like Eddie. My question is, do you think that mxr will ever make a Rhoads signature distortion, probably based on the distortion +. Like what they did with the dime distortion? I'd buy it, because I can't afford that marshall 1959rr and mxr could rake in a fortune. Randy was voted on an internet poll one time for having the most desirable tone of the 80's. Please reply!

Didn't someone make a stomp box a few years back painted to look like the PDV? Can't remember if it was MXR...I think it was put on the market without the family's knowledge.
Anyone else know what I'm talking about, cuz I sure don't!

Re: Randy and Mxr
What you have to remember is randys tone came from more than just the mxr distortion +. Its a combination of his marshall 1959rr ( valves make the difference) plus the mxr and more than anything randy himself.mxr82 wrote:Okay guys, we all know that Randy was a big mxr user just like Eddie. I owned an original mxr distortion +, on its own its nothing special but put it through a proper marshall valve amp and it comes alive.
I have a Marshall jtm45 qith an mxr + and what a great combination, i also have other pedals like the ts808 tubescreamer which gives another great tone.
What i trying to get at is signature pedals dont get you the tone on there own, and randy's mxr distortion + as im lead to believe was standard with no mods.

What i was getting at was that it would be a huge marketing oppertunity. Like it wouldn't be his exact tone but it would be something that a person like me wish they had when they were a kid. Like the digitech brian may, it doesn't give you his exact sound but it duplicates his tone pretty well. The Rhoads pedal wouldn't necessarily be a mxr dist +, but more like a hot rodded marshall plexi with a dist+ circuit built into it. Kinda like steve vai's jem distortion, a boss ds-1 and ibanez tube screamer built into one box. I wasn't trying to be rude man, no hard feelings right?

What you have to remember with the marshall 1959rr is its a 100 watt non master volume valve amp and randys tone came from driving that amp at volume. you just cant play at that volume at home without an attenuator, when you drive a valve amp at volume you get natural overdrive which no pedal will replicate, what the mxr does is give the overdrive that the amp has produced more punch and sustain. the mxr into a clean amp sounds weak and nothing like randys tone, crank the baby up and you will see the difference.

Well like, I have a plexi that I modded and run wide open. Im in a van halen style band, and I actually use two different types of overdrive, a dod 250 and and a mxr +. I can get RR's madman sound, so im good on getting that Rhoad's sound. I just wanted em' to make one for the kids that are on a low budget and can't afford nothing but that little stompbox that duplicates his tone. I'm 19 and a guitar builder in college. Guys constantly come up to me after shows and ask how I get my tone and I tell em' about all my expensive analog gear and my marshall rig. They can't afford that stuff and I think Randy would be honored if they made a device that captured his raw tone and was made at an affordable price.

I agree 100% it would be an honor but as you know like i do being amp builders ( i built my marshall jtm45) that no stompbox alone will ever get you randys tone, and all that would happen is people would slag it off. I build pedals also and would love to invent a pedal that sounds like a plexi but i dont ever see that happening.mxr82 wrote:Well like, I have a plexi that I modded and run wide open. Hey man, there is one that I just bought not to long ago it's called the classic brownie distortion, guitar fetish.com puts it out. It duplicates a jcm800, a modded plexi, and a wide open plexi. It's close but nothing like the 59' plexi I modded with a cascading gain circuit, but I think were missing the point in this man, Randies tone was in his hands, so R.I.P. Randall. Also check out my Gus G. replacements post in the ozzy osbourne section, tell me what you think.

I agree with the original poster.. It would be a great honor for Randy, and it would be a cool pedal. Of course it isnt gonna make you sound like Randy.. Every one of us in this forum could take Randys actual guitar and play it through his actual rig and it still wouldnt sound like Randy.. It took me a long time to learn that most of your tone comes through your hands.. Your sound comes from amp.. There is a difference.. Im all for the polka dotted mxr RR distortion + !
