No offense intended, by why must every website require you to sign up for a membership these days? For years people complained about 'Big Brother' taking away their privacy, and now everyone voluntarily joins Facebook, Twitter and 9 million fan sites that require some type of membership... I don't get it.

Hi Paul

You can vote in the poll on our blog by just clicking the link to it on the bottom of our home page without registering. The blog is separate from our site proper which is a service for protecting, storing and sharing the details of guitars. We only collect the minimum of information, username and email because you kinda need that for the database to create an account that is private and can only be logged into by the user that created it. That's the nature of online community interaction, to have an identity and participate you need to have a name and a way of being contactable.

Hi fintanbk,

I understand the need to have a name and contact info to fully participate in a given community online, sorry for hijacking your thread. It just seems like every site I go to these days require signing up in order to view anything on the site... "join here, it's free!" By the way, I wish you all the success in the world with your site. Again, sorry if my present state of mind caused any friction.

Hi Paul

No worries, thanks for your good wishes, it's an interesting question to contemplate and it is of course irritating if you just want to look and not necessarily use a site which is why we opened up our search page for people to take a peek at the site and see if it is something they might be interested in using. The subject of privacy is of key importance to our members as many of them have valuable collections which is why we allow our members to use our service invisibly if they wish to remain anonymous.

Over the past couple of years my own position as an internet user has changed on the subject of online identity in relation to a few key areas. Principally where I am purchasing anything, these days I find ebay too opaque for my own liking and I think the next big change for the internet will be the wide establishment of online trusted marketplaces where identity is transparent and products/services that are purchased will need to perform to expectations or be accountable in the clear light of the community that they are operating within, likewise those purchasing same - rather than the vague ratings systems that are currently often used to try to boost buyer and seller confidence.

Like I say it's interesting to contemplate how online privacy will develop in the coming years if a little OT for here.

Hi Fintan,
This was the original link that was posted: http://blog.dbtwang.com/the-people’s-fa ... oll-opens/
The " ' " in the word "People's" made the whole post invisible when using url tags, fixed it, the link works fine now. :)

Thnx for posting & welcome aboard! 8)
