Ultimate Rhoads

Hey, I know I just joined but I just downloaded a couple shows and they are MP3. Yuck! How can you do that? If you can't do what Trader's den or Dimeadozen can then redirect people there. MP3 has got to be the worst! We should have proper wave files. Please educate yourselves! Those trading sites don't allow MP3 because they muck up the pool. I want to share any recordings that sound better or are new to the forum but I don't want to put them in MP3. Let's put it this way, If you paid for them, would you want MP3's or a wave.? A clone or a smaller file than you started with? These forums are about sensibility and democracy so what do you guys think? I know learning new stuff can be a hassle to us long-in-the-tooth (I'm trying to figure out how to upload shows) but when you press play.,. Ahhh, so worth it.

i think it's a matter of size and downloadtime. think of it like this ...
you have an album with 10 songs, each roughly around 4mins.
that would be equal to approx 4mb of harddrive space(for a decent
file, there are better which are somewhat larger ) ... 4mb's doesn't
take to much time to download

now, if you have excellent quality files i WAVE format of the same album.
it oughta equal atleast 40-50mb for each song. that would be a total
of 4-500mb and that takes even more time downloading.

No offense intended, but 99% of the bootleg recordings have crappy sound to begin with. "Audiofiles" who want to get as close to perfection as possible should simply look elsewhere for their recordings. Some of us are happy to just hear a show and leave it at that. I have most of these shows downloaded and rarely listen to them.

If you want good quality of the studio recordings, go buy the CD.

I know this may piss some folks off, but mp3 is the standard. It may not be the best, but it is the standard and I feel we should make these recordings available to as many people as possible.

I just listened to Cardiff Wales and it does sound pretty good. I just believe it degrades as it's passed along. We have all heard some friend's download from limewire that sounds like poop on a stick... Those high cymbals fading or degrading. So, I just worried about the future so, to speak. Do ya dig, man?

I find it rather sad you actually care that a song is in mp3 format.
It's the easiest to obtain and the least in filesize.
I can barely even tell the difference most the time...or maybe people just need to stop converting it to 128 kbps Mp3.

Yeah but think of the worst MP3 you have ever heard. How did that come to be? I admit as before the files sound good but don't cha want a guy on your side to beef up the quality or suggest it?

Oh, I definitely agree that some downloads are horrible!

I usually run any boot I download through Adobe Audition (used to be Cool Edit Pro) to remove as much hiss as possible - it's amazing how much that improves the quality. Then I copy the track twice and boost/clarify bass levels on one and treble levels on the other. Then I multi-track them with the original and almost always come away with a superior version than I started with.

What amazes me is downloading a studio track that is super low, volume-wise. Simply boosting the volume helps. Then running a preset EQ can do wonders.

I realize Adobe Audition is a bit pricey, but how many guitar players have thousands invested in multiple guitars yet won't ante up for some quality recording software? What's the point in having 5, 6, 7 guitars and a bunch of crap recordings to be inspired from or an inability to create your own decent demos?

Ultimately, I do see your point about the sound quality, but even with mp3s there is a lot that can be done to improve them.

This demonstrates one good thing.

At least enough of us care about the music to be interested in preserving Randys work in the best possible way, thats really cool One other good thing that has emerged within the RR world is that we have been able to share his work in a way that might has removed a profit element and devalued them in cash terms.
This way the shows are kept as Fan property and are less likely to become a $ earning issue.

I'd like to point out that almost every show (exluding about 3) are 192kpbs BLADE Mp3 quality and were ripped BY ME from the CD's provided to me by Trigger/Ian. This means that they are as close as you can get to the first gen, assuming that they haven't been through degrading processes before, but lets not forget, if that is the case, converting them to WAVE, FLAC wouldn't make a difference. I felt that 128 was a little too low, despite the fact I've had numerous people say they cannot tell the difference. 192kpbs in my opinion is the best compromise between size and quality

At the moment, people are able to download shows within a short space of time and be able to listen to them. Hell, i've even downloaded the odd show in Uni and listened to it through the headset. If we had them as wav files, this wouldn't be possible. Wav files can still be traded around the net ofcourse, but we are not trying to promote the sale or profit of these bootlegs. We are trying to merely provide Rhoads fans with a collection of recordings.

One thing here to add Joe, when I gave those audios to you to get ready for the site it was not only 100's of shows but many Many (inc the RR shows) were good 1st gen copies on well preserved and protected tapes. This makes much of our shows are of the highest available quality.
It was a huge effort that we (mainly Joe) went to to provide this service and took months of planning to open the audio section as we see it today.

I am just grateful to even HEAR all these live show nevermind being able to download and keep them for FREE! I spent most of my teenage years searching record stores for any RR stuff and when I did find something it was priced to the max and usually a mislabeled King biscuit rip off. Thanks for providing the audio!!!

+1 Jay , I guess we're from the " old school " way of thinking , ..some peeps these days want the world and for nothing ! and then complain about it !!!
