I play in the same way (fingers spread out) and it's just easier and more comfortable. I imagine Randy probably felt the same way. I doubt there's some deep, interesting story behind it.

probably. i think it's just a matter of comfort really.

take Eddie Van Halen for example ... while most guitarplayers
hold the pick(if they use one ;) ) between their thumb and indexfinger,
Eddie uses his thumb and middle finger.

Marty Friedman is another example of unusual picking technique,
but hey, it works for him 8)

the point is, don't dwell so much over it. just play and it will
come to you naturally :)

The answer I've always heard is that he is muting the strings as he plays. It does look cool. Anyway, after getting the 1959RR and Gibson LPC and running a pedal board with similar pedals, you have to mute ALL the time or it just feedbacks really bad. Randy mastered this and doesn't really get credit for it, but on the Tonight fade, you can hear it at the 5:01 mark and it's really present throughout his work. I think it's amazing what he did with the guitar when he wasn't playing notes. Anyway, bottom line - master technique muting.

I have terrible feedback with my EMGs. I have EMGs plus a 5150 head, stocked with Electro-Harmonix tubes. The guy who works on my amp actually told me that Electro-Harmonix are especially "hot" and can have problems feeding.
But yeah, I play with my fingers fanned out to sort of combat the squeals, Etc.

no, I don't have a Marshall 1959, but EMGs are known for being dead silent anyway ;) 8)

nah. as far as I know, EMGs are underwound to keep
humming away, then the signal is boosted by an internal
preamp :)

wareagle wrote:hey guys nother question. if youve watched randy play youll see his fingers middle, ring aand pinky and spread out as far as can go and the pinky is even more spread. why does he do this? just his style? did he break his hand younger and cant really bring it together as well? i find it very uncomfortable and very hard and idk why hed do it but still. jus wonderin.
I play that way naturally as well. I have found most play with fingers all bent but I just cant get used to that style.
