Randy's picking hand

To settle a debate!
Y'know when Randy picks usually, he has the fingers not holding his pick kinda outstretched. I want to know, why does he do this? My friend thinks it's due to his hybrid picking. I think it's either evolved from using the whammy bar or that's "just the way he does it"
Anyone got a clue?

I'd say a combination of his fingerpicking and "just the way he does it"... I don't fingerpick, but I tend to have a similar picking-hand position when I play. I often anchor my pinky on the body.. I'll have to check out some video to see if Randy does that...

Randy doesn't do that all the time does he? I thought he just did it when he did "special" notes and stuff, i don't know.

During Mr. Crowley (After Hours) you can see he holds the tremelo bar almost constantly between his fingers.
For hybrid picking it's not needed to stretch out, I would even say the opposite, because it's hard to pick when your fingers are stretched.
I think it was just the way he picked. I've seen people drink a cup of tea with their pinky stretched out, and there was no deeper thought behind it. They just hold the cup like that, no big deal.

... and some people spin a YoYo while playing guitar
George Lynch has a weird picking-style though

And look how Eddie is holding his pick when he is tremelo picking that famous Eruption speed picking part.
Lots of players have some physical habits no one else has. Randy was no exception on that.

Randy Rhoads could most definately spin a yoyo while playing guitar.

I find it much more comfortable with pinky outstretched, although I think Im in the minority.

Din't Rudy Sarzo said in the Randy Rhoads film, the japanse one, that he holds his pinky on the bridge because the amps where so loud or something?

i had forgotten, but when randy was trying to get me to use a pick, he suggested that i anchor my pinkie on the bridge the way that he does. he said it made it more stable.

If I remember correctly he said that Randy didn't pick that hard because his amps where so loud.
