I seen this photo and i noticed another Les Paul guitar next to the PDV.Remember this photo was taken in September - October 1980.This was well before the days of the 'black beauty'.Plus the Jackson guitars had not been made at this point. With Randy using detuned guitars for different songs and needing a back up guitar in case of any strings snapping etc.The only theory i can come up with, is that it may have been lent to Randy by the support bands guitarist John Thomas from Budgie. As we know he was very familiar with jamming with him on the road etc..Plus this guitar has never been mentioned before ?...

Interesting find. I don't think I've ever seen any photos of Randy playing a black Les Paul other than the "Black Beauty" and that shot on the back of Quiet Riot's first record.

It could also have been his guitar tech's guitar, I suppose.

Probably just a spare he never used?

In the Quiet Riot dvd's you can see a second off-white, antique white, cream colored (or what ever color your prefer) Les Paul in a stand on Randy's side. Donnie pointed that out to me long ago.

The one he'd been photographed with belonged to his girlfriend's brother, Kevin said. Although I would imagine that in LA in the late 70's, as popular as Randy was... you probably couldn't find anyone that wouldn't let Randy use their guitar for a backup.

Good eye Shaun!
I think it's the same black les paul as in the pic above.

Someone is holding a guitar there, you can't see the entire guitar, but part of a guitarneck can be seen clearly here. Maybe someone was tuning his Les Paul?

Look at Randy's V in that photo. You can see the top of the upper wing with no polka-dots. Randy often put gaffers tape on this section of his white Jackson, but I never noticed it on his V.

Not a clue. On the white Jackson I assumed it was because of glare from the stage lights, but on a polka dot V? I just don't know. You can clearly see the gaffer's tape in this pic:
