I would say a good substitude for the Altec would be the EVM12L speaker. They are both very clean speakers but do sound different with their own character though. I have one Altec 417-8H speaker (the model Randy used) and compared it to the reissued EVM12L speaker. For distorted sounds I liked the EVM12L much better. They are both very clean speakers, but I think the EVM12L is cleaner, brighter and punchier and little more 'scooped' in the mids compared to the Altec. Also the Altec colours the sound from the amp more than the EVM12L does. I guess most metal players would prefer the EVM12L over the Altec. I think the EVM12L first came to market in 1983 or so. And I feel Randy would have started using these speakers if he had lived a couple years longer. Both the Altec and EVM12L are very heavy weight speakers! (EVM12L = 8,6 kg, Altec 417-8H = 6,2 kg)

*this company http://www.greatplainsaudio.com/news.html still make and repairs Altec speakers. Not sure if they make the 417-8H as well, but maybe they can help you out?
