I doubt I'd ever go so far as a BOOK, but once I have EVERYTHING all scanned, edited and retouched - who knows what the future might hold.
I found out early on that pursuit of getting things into magazines wasn't really even worth the hassle. It's "who you know" and "who you are" (have to already have made a name for yourself, somehow) and being located in a major media city.
I was none of those and had no interest in any of that, so I just sold photos directly to "fans", instead, on my own

Yeah i hear what your saying Dave but you have got to start at the bottom like all pro photographers. If your work or name is never seen you'll just be making a gallery of photos for your own viewing. I photographed local bands at venues in my home town. I did a bit of selling photos like you have done. But it is hard to make a worth while living from doing this. It's just a hobby for me and if i get any jobs to photograph bands etc its a bonus.RhoadsRockPhotographer wrote:I doubt I'd ever go so far as a BOOK, but once I have EVERYTHING all scanned, edited and retouched - who knows what the future might hold.

Nic found these and i thought i'd put them in this thread as they are DOTG pics. I noticed that backdrop of trees/bushes etc did it come down during the gig as its not on other pics i've seen ?

The last gig i was at Metallica 3rd March just gone. It was just so hard to even focus on a band member to click the shutter, without getting someone dropped on you from crowd surfing or the surge of people crushing you trying to get to the front etc. But i got a few good pics that im happy with. You mentioned the Scorpions at the DOTG in '85. They were the first band i ever saw live back in 1979. I got the chance to photograph them in 1984.RhoadsRockPhotographer wrote:It simply became absolutely impossible (here) to continue after late-'83, or so. The "no cameras" thing became the basic rule.
The last REAL arena (or larger) shows I photographed were Queensryche in '85 (Warning Tour) and the Aug. '85 DOTG headlined by Scorpions. I lost one of my best lenses in that madness, in Oakland. Those DOTG shows were getting harder by the year to get decent photos from, with a WHOLE lot more pushing and shoving going on than had been the case in prior years.
You mentioned Van Halen that must of been a good time to see them i think they became very commercial after that tour. I have only ever seen them once and that was back in '79 and that was looking through a broken window and it still looked awesome. Cheers for those pics again Dave and if you have anymore to share please do.

I don't recall that backdrop at all. It was probably only for a couple songs, if that. Same stage though, obviously.GUITARIDOL5682 wrote:Yeah i hear what your saying Dave but you have got to start at the bottom like all pro photographers. I sold my photos nationally (all over the US and Canada), not just locally. As a matter of fact 99.5% of my sales were NOT locally. They were sold through my ad in CIRCUS magazine, back in the day (1978-1985).
I'd rather deal with people directly, 1-to-1, than the longshot and hoop-jumping of trying to get them published. Like I said, if it's not a cover shot, it's simply nothing that pays decent enough to even give a second thought about, in the first place.
Few artists (with the exception of those who have been deceased for many years, already) are going to be pictured now, with cover shots from photos taken 25-30 years ago - so that issue has already kind of taken care of itself.

That photo and a load of others have gone due to photobucket. All the pics are from Ross Halfin's web site.RR-ElectricAngel wrote:Where is the photo of Randy siting backstage with Sharon? I can't find it anymore.

Not There
I still can't seem to find Randy and Sharon on his site anywhere. It must be buried somewhere deep or I simply not looking in the right place on his site.GUITARIDOL5682 wrote:All the pics are from Ross Halfin's web site.

No comment how they appear close in the picture...yes getting (I think) to 'the bit' in Sharon's book 'Extreme' at the moment.
