Possible. I am not sure. I mean he did use that technique, just not nearly as much as EVH. I mean, I can only think of a handful of times he used it and that includes his spot light solo, both from Quiet Riot and Ozzy. I would wager he was more in to doing arpeggios across strings and not just tapping, were Ed seems to be some what limited to tapping. I have often wondered that very question you are asking.
