Re: Randys pedals from guitar to amp
he could just stomp on it because he had a min volume knob on the volume pedal i thot he set that at the point where it sounded clean then he could pull the volume back all the way...oh btw ive gigged (one time infront of just over 500 ppl)just dont own a volume pedal at the moment...also if we want to continue this thread i think a mod should move it to somwhere. i dont want cause "clutter" in the General sectionwareagle wrote: hed have to lower his volume pedal almost all the way back to get it clean... and its just a pain to do that

RR-ElectricAngel wrote:I've always wondered if there is some secret arrangement no one has thought of that would create some new dimension to guitar tone. All I ever find (Ask.com) is this as a general rule...
"Use the following effects order when setting up your pedals: Guitar, Wah, Octave, Noise Gate, Compressor, Overdrive/Distortion, EQ, Modulation effects, Delay, Reverb. Place your pedals in this order from right to left (to make cable connections easier.) If a particular pedal is not part of your setup, simply skip over it and continue to the next guitar pedal type".
Then it says this as well...
"There are no strict rules regarding making guitar tones. The order of effects mentioned here are the most commonly used by guitarists. This order is common because it maintains the purity of the guitar tone as much as possible throughout the chain. However, many interesting guitar sounds have been made by breaking the rules. Get used to this standard setup first and then feel free to experiment with pedal placement as you gain experience and understand what each pedal does to a guitar's tone".
If Randy did break the rules I sure would like to know how. Anybody willing to demonstrate the difference?
I've always kind of taken EVH's approach to guitar tones and set-ups and what not, if it sounds good that's all that really matters. Having said that, I have always loved the way that Randy thought things out, from his pedal set-up to the way he recorded to the way he composed songs and solos. There is something to be said for both approaches as well as others, I guess that's why most guitar players are such "tone-chasers", for me its never ending. I have a base tone that I work from, but I am always experimenting with sounds and set-ups, thats why threads like this one are some of my favorites, I get new ideas from them, I think Randy would like them also.

gerally thats correct. only in some cases are they not..
wah goes after fuzz because fuzz drains out wah, compressor goes after everything ala trey from phish.

Just would point something out here , Jimi used a distortion before the wah because it sounded different. In the case of Randy in the studio he has the amp turned all the way up and is not even in the same building with it , if I remember correctly. I have a few 100 stomp boxes and have always put the volume pedal next to last in my chain before the noise gate ,wah is always near the front of my chain before dist , can also put additional distortion in between spots to add/change tone .You dont have to have things in the exact same order and wired exactly the same to get the same sounds either for the most part in my experience. With a custom wired board like that you can place your pedals where you like them and wire them in whatever order you want inside/underneath it out of sight. Random 2 cents worth
Re: Randys pedals from guitar to amp
jimi used it behind a fuzz... a fuzz face infact, which are notorious for not working well with wah behind it, so he had to. and thats the exception, it somtimes will go after a fuzz like that
100 pedals?! gearmanndude.... eric whorton... is that you?
im not arguing it has to be before distortion im saying i think randy had it there

Oops... missed that page. I have to admit you have a point The MrAxeman. The strength of the Wah in the first setup definitely reminds me of Randy in the QR days. This is really a tough one...The MrAxeman wrote:click the link under the media player on my post to hear a difference between guitar=d+=eq=wah=amp and guitar=wah=eq=d+=amp if thats what you mean
