If its not a 21 fret dano neck or a fender term it's not arhoads pdv IMO.
It was based on a Gibson V is what we are alluding to here, so to get specs for a copy, specs for a Gibson would be appropriate. Being a set neck guitar, it'd be difficult to use a Gibson body with a different neck, so it was most likely a V copy or Karl built the body himself and then modified the Danelectro neck to give it an arrowhead appearance.
As for the Fender tremolo, Floyd's weren't common in 1979 - when Floyd received his patent, so Karl used a Fender which was common. Had the Floyd been more accessible in '79, I'm sure Randy's V would have had one. As it was, Randy was used to the Fender style and chose that for his first Jackson as well. Not to mention, Kramer had the exclusive rights to the trem at the time.
sik_kreations wrote:Paul regardless of all that, a replica is a replica. Even in 82 Randy still didn't have a Floyd and the 3 being built for him didn't have a Floyd.
I'm sure the v isn't an exact Gibson spec, since it has a fender style bridge and not a tune o matic.
Like Paul said, it was based off a Gibson V in the sense that Karl used
one to trace out the body for the PDV and he probably didn't use a Floyd
because he was used to the Fender-trem.
It's like a evh frakenstein, it's not a fender strat, but it's a guitar thats a copy of one. I know the dimensions are based off a Gibson, but it ain't a gibson.
No, it's not a Gibson. It is the same shape as a Gibson with the neck/fingerboard attaching in the same place as a Gibson (some other companies have the fingerboard extend onto the body area while Gibson fingerboards end at the neck/body joint). In other words, it's based on a Gibson.
You seem to be getting hung up on the Floyd aspect. Floyd tailpieces were new - even in '82. They were not a common thing until Ed started using them and then everyone wanted one. Randy did say he thought they were good, but he didn't change his guitar to one once it was made with the Fender tailpiece. He was used to it and if it ain't broke, don't fix it! He rarely used the trem except for noise live anyway, so he didn't need to worry about having a Floyd. I'd bet money that, had he lived, he'd have owned a guitar with a Floyd.
As for someone making a replica, there is only one original. ALL the polka dot V's out there are replicas. Regardless of who makes them, none of them are Randy's guitar. If someone likes the Floyd system, by all means they should have one installed. Randy never copied others note for note when he played covers and he never copied anyone's style exactly, he adopted the spirit of the style and made it his own. That is what should be done with any "PDV" replica - capture the spirit and add some of yourself.
I think the RR Paradox is that if you want to be really like him; you realise (eventually through your love of him) that being like him, truly means being nothing like him!

Indeed... I think Randy spent enough time teaching his students to find their own voice that it would be appropriate to say that to be like Randy would be to be yourself.

You couldn't have stated that any better!!! I agree 100%, take the essence of the idea and put your own personal stamp on it. Don't just copy it, but expand upon it and take to a whole other new level. That's what I'm doing with my RR Polka Dot V.
