RR and EVH

Ed is Ed, but he was definately my 2nd biggest influence on guitar through my teenage years. Those first 6 VH albums are just beyond great and he was/is just so cool to watch live.

my favorite album is diver down..alex's snare tone just kill's me!and so does ed's tone..i still have it on vinyl and listen to it full blast from time to time!

Yeah, I like that album too, my favorite off of that record has always been Hang em' High.

DD is great..its always been viewed as the weakest but the songs have diverse style and originality:full bug,heh,secrets,where have all the good...

this album sounds nothing like their previous albums.

one thing that killed me about ed is what a great showman he was.ive never seen a more active musician than him besides dlr.And he looked cool doing it.the largo video from 82 is great as well as a bunch of youtube stuff.how did he come up with those moves?

I love the original stuff that is on DD, Ed's solo in Secrets is a great example of excellent note choice. That Largo concert is fantastic, VH was just so off the hook great back then.The only other guitar player that I've seen move remotely that well on stage was my biggest teen influence Jake E. Lee (who has said he always thought Eddie moved great on stage), and maybe Ted Nugent (esp. young Ted), but you are right oth, Ed is the king. One other thing about Eddie live is that his tone is always so great, he can play as loud as he wants and it doesn't really hurt your ears.

very tru ted and oth!how bout "big bad bill"?vh senior playing the clarinet!?i love that song!!!largo is the perfect example of why vh is so respected today!not just largo..ahh i'm rambling peace guys!!!

That era of Van Halen is just so beyond what it seemed like other bands were capable of, I mean Little Guitars is a perfect example. I can't think of another band that could have pulled a song like that off, and it still holds up today! Randy's stuff is that way to, Crazy Train got an award for one of the most played songs in 2008, 26 years (or so) after it came out and it still sounds as fresh and alive today as it did when Blizzard came out. Guys like Eddie and Randy ( God rest his soul) come along once in a lifetime, and I'm glad it was my lifetime!!

ya i forgot little guitars cuz i was trying not to forget the other less known songs.LG is a masterpiece-talk about throwing a curveball after fair warning.
This album takes a completely different direction after the first 4.

Theres one video clip of ed bouncing off his amp stack kinda like what skateboarders do?I think its from 1978 or 1982...after you really got me or ice cream man?His athleticism is amazing.Also he looked amazing in that 1980 german video of u really got me...VH and their clothes looked cool and original -specially evh his striped overalls in 82-83.I saw vh in 84 and it was amazing.Wish i had seen em on dd tour or earlier...

He does that jumping off the amp deal on the Largo video too, the few clips I have seen from the Fair Warning tour are just unbelievable. I don't know of any band that could touch VH in their prime when it comes to the live show, they had everything, musicianship, showmanship a rock-n-roll mystique, everything. Although I have heard from several people on this site that Ozzy w/ Jake stole the show at Donington 84,which also had VH on the bill, that says alot because the one clip I have seen of Van Halen at Donington 84' is just freakin' incredible. That is also the show (if I remember right) where Jake said both Eddie and Gary Moore told him he was the best new guitar player they had heard in a long while. And I think also (Trigger please correct me if I am wrong) that Ozzy said that was one of the best shows he had ever played. That's interesting considering that by all accounts when Black Sabbath took VH out they (Sabbath) got killed every night, they themselves have even said that ( I know I'm rambling). It's so interesting to me when things intertwine that way.

i love jake but i wasnt impressed with him live-it looked like practiced posing -i saw jake about a week after i had seen vh.never have seen donnington but ed is wearing something other than his patched leather jeans.i dont think ed has ever complimented any 80s guitarist aside from jake and he kinda said vai was good.he s always been curiously quiet about 'the' guitar era.guess he s stuck way out on his island.i dont know why in his many interviews that the interviews never got him to give a detailed opinion of rr.Its weird because they were #1 and 2 in the mags thru the 80s.Ed might have told tthe mags -dont ask for my opinion on any 80s guitarists and especially RR?

ted,the only band that came close to vh live was queen when i saw them in 1981.i need a cleaned up version of largo.i also wanna see the begginning of romeo delight more clearly on largo.

No disrespect meant here, but all I ever saw in Jake live was, and this word describes it best, fire. I have heard some people say that by the end of his time with Ozzy he was in some cases going through the motions, but every clip I have seen from the Bark at the Moon tour is fantastic, no more posed than some of the stuff Eddie did, and I mean absolutely no disrespect to you or Eddie so please don't take it that way. Jake with Badlands was some of the most real, honest rock-n-roll I have seen or heard in a long time, the dvd I have of them in Chicago, despite it's quality, is incredible and Jake plays his ass off. As I recall, when Eddie was asked about Steve Vai and Billy Sheehan playing with DLR, he said "yea, Dave had to hire the baddest mf's in town to replace us", which was probably true. I saw them on the "Eat em and Smile" tour and they were really good. I saw Steve Vai on "That Metal Show" the other night and he was extremely complimentary of Eddie, that really impressed me coming from a player as good as Steve. I didn't really think about it until you mentioned it but Queen live was definately a band that could rival early VH, there was just something about them that seemed larger than life. Again, no disrespect about Jake, you gotta remember, when I was a teenager Jake was The Man to me.

ya i remember when ed was talkin about the dlr band-he wouldnt even mention vai by name i think.He was stingy with compliments.
