i've heard a couple of reasons for the tape the one paul has already mentioned about the glare from the lights reflecting on the polished sheen of the paint on the guitar.The other was to protect the guitar from getting scuffed and chipped from his studded belt and wrist bands.The later seems to be more favourable...
