Something Odd On Randy's Guitar

Post by BowTie29 »

I saw this picture and am curious about what is on Randy's bridge pickup. It looks almost like there is a zebra humbucker in the slot, however Im almost certain that that is not the case. Just interested to know what it is...

The bobbins for the neck pickup are toward the top of the neck

And the bobbins for the bridge are towards the bridge

It's part of the pickup

You are seeing the screws. In that pick

Randy's pickups were covered so normally you cant see the bobbins at all.

Did you think the bridge pick up was a double dimarzio or something similar. I can see that now but it is a shadow. I could understand Randy doing something like this as he was a stickler for sound. Not like EVH, but if he had ever done something like this and played one gig and then realised his mistake and changed it back to the original pup.

This thread made wonder about something else. Covered pickups, gold worse than chrome or nickle suck output and tone a little bit. Some say more than a little. His LP was his only stage guitar with covered pickups. As far as looks go I like covered pickups on certain guitars. Maybe he liked the look and thats why he never changed them out on the LP.

You can remove the pickup covers on pretty much all pickups as far as i know. There just covers, that is it..They look, the same underneath as uncovered pickups. He could have covered the pickups on his other guitars if chose to. The only negative is that is lowers the output slightly and they tend to feedback a bit more than uncovered pups.

Yes, pickup covers can be removed. I dont think they are in this pic, however the white on the bridge pickup in this picture is lighter than the guitar body color, which is why Im not sure that it is the natural color and the top half is just a shadow.

Yes obviously in that photo is just a shadow. But I was just saying his other stage guitars were uncovered and he never bothered to uncover or change out the LP pickups.

so true...me and a mate both have bareknuckle nailbomb pickups in alder body strat style guitars, his is covered and mine is uncovered and mine has a lot more gain than his...it was a real surprise when we a/b'd them
