Re: Over the Mountain - Stryper
Both vocalist / guitarist Michael Sweet and guitarist Oz Fox were very influenced by Randy Rhoads - both played Jackson's early on, Mike the Rhoads model and Oz a Soloist. I'm friendly with Mike (he lives out here in MA) and he let me mess around with his Rhoads once - said it never went out of tune and was one of his most reliable guitars for recording and also playing live.
As for the song, I'm not a huge fan of the "galloping" rhythm guitars during the verses, but the rest of the song kills. Mike sounds really good singing Ozzy stuff and it's not a stretch for a vocalist of his talent. Oz did the solo on the record and nailed it - he is one of the most under-rated lead guitarists out there. Check out their '92 album "Against The Law", particularly the solo on "Two Bodies", and guitar work on "Caught in the Middle" and "Lady".
The original 4 members of Stryper are back together and making new music, so check out the Stryper Forum message board or their website for details and updates. Yeah, they get grief for their Christian lyrics, but no one can argue that these guys don't play and look better now than 90% of their 80's contemporaries. If you get a chance to see them live, be sure to check them out...but be warned, their concerts are LOUD.
