That's exactly what I said in my earlier post. I think it's definitely a possibility.

They did "vocal comps" which means, they pulled certain lyrics, words, phrases, ect from multiple concerts and pasted them into one performance.

This is definitely a possibility. When my band was making our album, our vocalist sang like 10 different takes, and the engineer cut and pasted certain words/lyrics from different performances (studio takes). For instance, maybe take #4 had the best saying of the word "trouble", and they cut and paste it, and drop it right into the main track. So, in the end, you have a perfect vocal take (which is really a combination of several vocal takes).

yeah but there is a big difference in recording vocal takes in the studio and trying to pull them from multiple live performances. The biggest thing is the tempos are not the same from night to night and that would be a pain in the ass, even with pro tools, also Ozzy forgot and maybe up words nightly and his pitch was very questionable on a lot of the boots. I'm sure they are re recorded vocals from back in the day, maybe around 87'.

I just got my box today and the live CD sounds amazing and like some here I'm skeptical that is Ozzy with no sort of touch ups on his voice, I've heard a lot of boot recordings and Ozzy's pitch is questionable at the best of times, if this is not touched up it's some of his best performances ever, with the techonology that's out there now a days there is so much you can do to fix things that I'm sure some touching up was done. Either way it's a ripping performance with an awesome "Live" feeling mix, much better than Tribute in my opinion.

I'm also feeling the same way about After Hours, it sounds to me like Ozzy is more in tune then I remember but I haven't had a chance to A/B it against my old copy.

Good points Estang74. Yeah - I thought they maybe re-recorded some vocal takes from 87' (during Tribute as well).

Still - the question lingers...Ozzy sounds fantastic. His voice almost changes from record to record. The voice on the new live album DOES sound like the 81-82 Ozzy. So, I think it's really from that era.

The 86-87' Ozzy doesn't sound as "gritty." Plus, his voice is breaking-up from all of the booze (most likely).

Think of the duet he did with Lita (Close My Eyes Forever)...his voice is probably at it's best.

IF ANYTHING - his voice sounds like it did in the early 90's (during the No More Tears era).

Maybe they were thinking of another Tribute album around then, and this has been sitting there in the can since 90 or 91.

There is also the possibility that this was done for possible use on the upcoming live album, just like Tribute was. Ozzy said in an interview they had a portable studio with them, but he never knew when they were using it or not. They had already planned, before Randy's death, to put out a live album as we all know. So these vocals may have indeed been done back in '82 to prepare for the live release.

You gotta ask yourself, if this new live cd was released AS Tribute back in 87', and the Tribute show (Cleveland) was released in this box set, what would you be thinking?

My opinion is that the band sounds good and tight on this new live album, but I think Randy's performance on Tribute (Cleveland gig) was...well,...better. IMO.

huh?? he doenst do the gallop thing on alot of shows.. Even on After Hours

He most certainly does the gallop on AH ............. *scratches chin* It isnt as consistent as the studio version, he does it a bit differently, but he does it. Cleveland he doesnt do it at all.

listen to it again, he doesnt do it all the way like the studio album if its what you mean.. I play guitar myself and he definatly doenst play the gallop like the studio

The only thing I can tell you about the vocals are...

they were definitely all done in the same day, or over the same few days. It sounds like Ozzy has a cold or something???!!!

He almost sounds like Eddie Money at certain moments.

All of the songs sound like they are from the same concert, but apparently, they are not???

What I mean is, on Tribute/Cleveland he IS playing on the A string, but he's only downpicking. It isnt the same gallop feel at all. On all the rest of the boots Ive heard, he does it at least a little. Not EXACTLY like the studio version's 16ths on the A string but he goes up and down, whereas on Cleveland he's only going down.

Yes, this stuff is much better than Tribute sound-wise, mix-wise and tone-wise. I suppose playing-wise is subjective LOL but I like this better in that respect too haha.
