"My Brother Randy": My 1982 Kelle Rhoads Interview
New on the Jas Obrecht Music Blog: Part 2 of my Randy Rhoads celebration forcuses on his brother, Kelle Rhoads. Randy and Kelle grew up in the same house, attended the same schools, started a band together, and worked in their mom’s music store. After Randy joined Ozzy Osbourne’s band in 1980, he returned home during breaks from recording and touring. In fact, he spent his final days off – a ten-day break the Diary of a Madman tour – at the family home in Burbank, California. Less than a week later, Randy perished in a plane crash. When I interviewed Delores Rhoads five months later, she suggested I speak with Kelle for more details about Randy’s formative years. Here, for the first time, is my complete conversation with Kelle, which took place on August 15, 1982.

Again, much more detaled and touching (Unedited) God theese are things we never heard & ones that just came out in recent years. This was only a Few Weeks really after Randy Died.
Re: "My Brother Randy": My 1982 Kelle Rhoads Interview
Amazing, cheers again for being generous. Thanks
Re: "My Brother Randy": My 1982 Kelle Rhoads Interview
Again,I really would like to contribute or Donate to you for sharing theese w/us.
Are theese transcribed from audio interviews?? Theyre just So,So, detailed....I understand the magazines reasons for editing (to fill designated "pages" and such) but man did they Hack-up theese ones.I cant wait for the rest,I mean Ozzy & Rudy were still on the Diary Tour. The Original also had a short Quote from Tommy & one from Don too,but Rudys & Max's were lengthy like theese two. Thanks again!!!!!!
Its funny reading some of theese because some of the quotes that were left on the editors floor like Randy & Eddie having a Rivalry & them growing their nails.....Just a Treasure youve shared. It was so short after the accident,Randy hadnt yet reached the Cult status he would have by the time Tribute came out,& the Squeaky Clea Image wasnt as stressed as it grew to be (I am assuming at Mrs.Rhoads' request).

Glad you like them. There was a finite amount of room for that cover story, so copy had to be trimmed -- otherwise there wouldn't have been room for other articles. This is the nature of magazines. (Also the nature of pre-CD albums, as you'll learn when Max Norman talks about the long outtro solos they trimmed from Randy's two albums with Ozzy, to make all the songs fit onto the vinyl albums.)
Luckily, the internet has no such restrictions, so I am able to do the complete conversations.
Yes, these are new transcriptions from the original tapes. Rudy just gave me the go-ahead to do his, so that one will be coming next, then the Ozzy, which wasn't a very long conversation, but he is very loving toward Randy and emotional. The Max Norman will follow those, and this one has a lot of technical details about Randy recording his parts at Ridge Farm Studios. All of these conversations took place around August 1982.

Likewise. I still remember the first guitar magazine I ever bought. I actually bought it before I even had my first guitar or even thought of taking up playing. It just intrigued me and got me excited about the guitar. It was Guitar Player, and it had Craig Chaquico on the cover with a purple B.C. Rich Mockingbird. I just did a search and found it on eBay - it was January 1982.The One wrote:Jas Obrecht??? Man I grew up reading your work.
Thanks so much once again Jas, these raw interviews are pure gold!!!!! And I concur with The One, it really is an honour to have someone like yourself share this board with us! I look up to the guitar mag writers from back in the day with as much respect as the players that influenced me! People like Wolf Marshall and Andy Aledort were just as much my heros as a kid struggling to learn as the guitar gods they wrote about.
Do you recall what it was that Eddie Van Halen said about Randy? I'm very curious now!

What a really good interview, reading stuff Kelle said in 82 is pretty neat compared to what he says now. It's also really intriguing to read that there was this massive rivalry with Randy and Eddie yet neither really saw it as a competition.

Here's original Guitar Player article if anyone wants to refresh their memory. I certainly had forgotten the majority of what was said in it!

I was particularly surprised to hear Randy mention twice that he didn't enough patience! I had always figured that he must've had the patience of a Tibetan monk!
