After the Documentary...

Post by Clatonious »

If the doc gets a lot of notice then I wouldn't be surprised to see a true life story motion picture pop up. So here are some questions that come to mind...

1) Would we rather have someone who looks like Randy but can't really play guitar be the lead, or have someone that kind of looks like him but can play his stuff? Who would that person be. I'm torn on this one because I keep thinking of Ralph Macchio in Crossroads.

2) Would Oz and company participate/endorse/acknowledge or would it be a constant battle since the two are tied so closely?

3) Films before the 90's about people tended to focus on the good points only about a person, and usually dramatized (faked) alot of circumstances about the person. Then in the 90's on the big trend became to lay all the good and bad out there...what would you rather see?

1) I'd rather have someone that resembles Randy, 'cause we won't be able to tell
for sure who's playing. Movies are good at faking it.

2) If the Osbournes choose to participate, they would do it if it were to their advantage,
thus we get the same storys that they've been telling us for years.

3) Good ... Bad ... we're bound to get atleast some fiction 8)

I very much doubt this will happen look at how many other guitar greats who should be recognised with a film. I thought the' Doors' film with Val Kilmner was a great portrail of Morrisons career. It would be great to see something similar. But unfortunately the band normaly up stage the single band member i.e it would be an Ozzy life story with a few minutes of RR in the programme. I still think today that Randy is an old school player and is not recognised for the genius he brought to guitar playing. His style, image and creative rock classical playing just is very much over looked by younger people today.

I think this is just down to not being an Ozzy fan and listening to more up to date fashionable Metal Rock music i.e Slipknot, Iron Maiden, Metallica, AC/DC. Alot of people who play guitar know how difficult it is to play like Randy. But a younger audience would listen to someone like Joe Satriani and think Randy couldn't tie his shoe laces. This is just an example of my views before people jump to any conclusions OK.

Randy Was Unique

I think the motion picture would focus on Ozzy and not Randy. They wouldn't try that hard at getting someone that could visually upstage an Ozzy look-alike. Randy's character would be just a blip on the radar unfortunately. They might show a scene with Ozzy wasted and selecting a Randy (look-alike) guitarist. The next scene would be Ozzy eating a bat on stage. The next scene Randy would be gone. They wouldn't bother with developing the friendship between Randy & Ozzy because there are too many "crazy" Ozzy acts to show first. I mean they would have to show The Osbournes TV show as part of the story. Can you see where the story would take us? I can still remember Ozzy when he was unsure of himself while explaining the Diary of a Madman set. Randy on the other hand was never an out-in-front kind of person. He was a quiet, dedicated musician. No one wants to see someone working their butt off on guitar. People want to see someone piss on the Alamo (in San Antonio where I live) and dress in womans clothes, get arrested, snort ants etc. People want this  not :D

Actually, when the whole documentary subject first appeared, Peter Margolis said that he wanted to make the doc to tell people who Randy was and use that to spur interest in making a feature length film about Randy in the vein of La Bamba and The Buddy Holly Story. So, yeah, if the documentary is well received in the right circles in Hollywood, we could see a movie about Randy made.

As for who should play him, I say get an unknown who has the look and the rest can be worked out with good guitar instructors. Val Kilmer made a perfect Jim Morrison... so it can be done.

A feature film? Why not? A feature film would garner Randy the attention everyone says he deserves. This documentary will only be seen by fans.
