Play Like Randy
Here are some new DVD's to check out you future shredders out there...
Lick Library's unique "Learn To Play The Solos" format includes Randy Rhoads. The design of the "Learn To Play The Solos" DVDs includes a CD of professionally recorded guitar jam backing tracks at three different speeds, slow, medium and full tempo, performances of the solos at three speeds, plus expert tuition which breaks the solos down into easy to learn sections.
Randy Rhoads featured on Ozzy Osbourne's first two solo albums which have sold over six million copies combined. Often cited as an influence by many contemporary heavy metal guitarists, Randy Rhoads was one of the few guitarists of his era to create his own signature style by being one of the first heavy metal guitarists to incorporate classical music into his playing. Although he only issued a pair of major-label albums during his lifetime, he immediately reached legendary status upon his tragic death in early 1982.
Learn to Play Randy Rhoads, The Solos" {RRP £23.99} is presented by Danny Gill, former pupil of Joe Satriani and writer of many of the songs featured in "The Osbournes" TV show. Danny invites you to pick a track and grab a guitar as he takes you through note for note demonstrations of five characteristic Randy Rhoads solos at three different tempos. The DVD format gives you plenty of time to understand what Danny is showing you, and the chapter keys allow you to repeat each section as many times as you need to nail that guitar riff or lick. Solos included come from the tracks 'Goodbye To Romance', 'Crazy Train', 'Over The Mountain', 'Flying Again' and 'Mr. Crowley', all of which have become metal standards and showcase Randy Rhoads full talent as a guitarist.

This is an EXCELLENT DVD. I've got this one, the Learn to Play Ozzy DVD (with note-for-note lessons on full songs: Dee, Mr. Crowley, Crazy Train & I Don't Know) and the Quick Licks: Classic Metal DVD (which teaches you how to play solos in Randy's style as opposed to playing his exact solos).
The first two are by Danny Gill who is an excellent teacher and the Quick Licks one is by Jamie Humphries who is also excellent.
The Lick Library DVDs far surpass any instructional DVDs on the market. I've got 43 different DVDs from them and every one is pure gold. They have a new set coming out in November called Electric Blues in 6 Weeks in which Stuart Bull has a different DVD for each week to teach blues guitar. His idea being that most instructional DVDs have excellent info, but are not set up with specific practice regimens. So his blues set will have specific goals for each week. I can't wait for that to be released. Danny Gill will also be doing a similar one for rock guitar.
Here is a video of Danny Gill explaining the RR Solos DVD.
A lot more good clips from this DVD here.

I first bought the book and cd, but i saw he had done a dvd for it too. Its for cherry lane music, not lick library. I have not seen it in uk. I had to buy mine from america (ebay). First disk is 4 tracks from blizzard, 2nd disk 4 tracks from diary.
Its a really good dvd.

If this is like the other Danny Gill DVDs I've got, he does a great job of breaking things down into easy to digest pieces and explains things superbly. I haven't looked at any tab since I started using the Lick Library videos - and I always used to download the tab immediately when trying to follow a video lesson.
I just ordered this through Amazon... the other DVDs I've got cover the main songs, so I got this strictly for Diary and Revelation. You should check out the Lick Library Quick Licks video (youtube vid here) for a great analysis of Randy's style.

Hey ncm, my DVD arrived last night and I couldn't be more thrilled! Danny Gill is the best DVD instructor for breaking down songs that I've seen, and I've seen a lot! Revelation will indeed be a challenge, but by breaking it down bar by bar, it should be manageable. I'd never considered learning Little Dolls, but Danny makes it look like fun, so I'll have to give it a go.
