what were his settings on his marshalls? i know all his stuff, but just cant get a great 80s tone outta my super lead cranked up, its too nasaly, good for 70s bad for 80s, and i cant get the right distortion, im getting sooo much feedback expected but its almost like the amp is controlling me lol. any good tone settings or randys tone settings along with his pedal settings or where i could find them would help a bunch, thanks!
From what I know about Marshall Super Leads you turn everything up to 10. Literally. That is why many guys use attenuators. The power section of the amp has to be pushed into the "sweet" spot and that is everything cranked on a Marshall Super Lead. Now Randy had an MXR EQ, Distortion + and metal domed 12" Altecs loaded in his cabs. The Dist + had the volume maxed and the distortion minimal. His EQ boosted the mids (upside down smile on the graphic EQ sliders) and I'm sure those speakers had A LOT to do with the tone he got. Personally I don't like the nasally sound of a Super Lead. I like the JCM800 with the mids boosted. For me that delivers quite a bit more punch and cut. I didn't dig on Randy's tone all that much either. I think that was one of the main things he was trying to solidify for himself was a tone that he was comfortable with and would also scream "THIS IS RANDY RHOADS PLAYING THIS!" You listen to Blizzard and all those Blizzard era boots and then Diary and that following tour and you can really hear the evolution of his tone coming along.
Oh bring me some CHUNKY PUDDING, and bring it RIGHT NOW!!!
yh definatly, from 1980-1982 theres a huge change personally i think 81 was his best tone years, i think the 82 tone wasnt too great. they wouldnt have used an attenuator in concert right? that wouldnt make any sense. but an attenuator for me is too much money... i love the sound of the super lead i just need the 80s sound outta it, im kindaa etting it but i just hava keep trying, an attenuator would make this like 1000000x easier lol.
I searched .tk for someone who bought the RR model that Marshall put out. They said the booklet that came with the amp came with the amp's settings that Randy used:
nah like is ther a pic or a page where it said where he kept the knobs on each pedal? ik he overdrove his distortion+ by max output min gain, however i find theres not enough gain to get his tone, my tone is missing somthing, his was bassy mine really trebley. did his roland space echo make this?
Does anyone know what effect Randy used on the Diary tour? His tone was very different. He said in an interview once that the sound man was adding alot more up front. I know they did the panning delay through the board but I wonder what type of chorus/modulation he had going on. It's a very unique sound - very wicked sounding.
well he def added chorus, added lots more of his space echo, delay in there, idk his sound changed a lot, some of his solos almost sounded like he was using his neck pickup.
A friend of mine said the same thing regarding some of the solos. The second solo for Mr. Crowley in the Kalamazoo MI show sounds like the neck pickup. Who knows; wonder if we'll ever know.
