Ok. I know Tommy played with Ozzy in 83 in the Us festival. Then there was a video of Ozzy performing in Dortmund December of 1983 but the drummer was Carmine. Didn't Tommy play on the BATM tour in 1984? What happened to Carmine and was Tommy rehired?

tommy was fired after recording bark cos he wasnt good enough in the studio (thats what ozzy said in an interview later that year)

then carmine joined the band, he stuck with it for a while but was eventualy fired/asked to leave the band because he was too popular and had such a big reputation he was steeling some of the limelight from ozzy. Given that at the time sharon and the record company were trying to cemment ozzy as a solo artist (by giving him all songwriting credits on bark etc.) it was inevitable that things wouldnt work.

somehow tommy was drafted back into the band, surprising he said yes really :?

Ahh cool thanks. I remember someone on youtube saying Carmine had a big ego too.

well, im not sure it was his ego of such (although that was probably an issue too) the main thing was that whenever the ozzy show came into town people would go to seminars with carmine appice and seek out interviews with him, kinda like with randy but too a bigger extent.

when ozzy did interviews people kept asking him about his new drummer.

carmine was a star in his own right and worked on his image while he was on the road getting lots of attention from the media (i even think he did some stuff on tv)

although there is no proof this no doubt anoyed sharon, who was trying to build up ozzys fanbase, and maybe the record company. as far as i know there was never bad blood between ozzy/sharon and carmine, the stage was simply too small for he pair i guess.

I was lead to believe tommy was fired for, uhum, how shall we say, unprofessionalism but then again they cant talk :P and Carmine was trying to get ozzy to print on the ads "Ozzy featuring Carmine Appice" or something to that extent

At the 1983 British shows Carmine had his own t-shirts on sale alongside Ozzy's, I saw the first show that Carmine played with Ozzy and his over playing of the songs was dreadful :? I felt he was full of ego and his playing was overstated. I am a drummer and as young as I was back then I found Carmine too much.
In early March Tommy returned to the band and when I saw them in August with Tommy it was a thousend times better. the line up of Bob Don Tommy & Jake was the best line up since the 1981era with Randy Rudy and Tommy.
What still shocks me is that Carmines brother Vinnie is the drummer who replaced Bill Ward in Sabbath in 1980 and toured with Sabb and Dio, he still plays with the Sabbs in the new Heaven and Hell band..........

BUT

Carmine is still considered the best Drummer of the 2 brothers,Yet take a good listen to either and no question about it Vinnie walks all over Carmine on technique and style. I saw Vinnie play with Sabb in 1998 when Bill was ill, it was Tony, Geezer.Ozzy & Vinnie they were greatit was like a cross between both era's of Sabbath.

kinda off topic, but my fiance is a theater major here at the university in town, and i met her director dr. aldridge's husband. he'd aparrently taken time off as a roadie for REO Speedwagon ro help his wife while she produced "Godspell." I sat next to him one night at the show, and we got to talking about music and the biz when he got off on drumming. i asked him if he heard of tommy aldridge and was shocked to hear that was his cousin. she was sitting next to me laughing at me and later on goes "you seemed a little starstruck when i whispered back to her "he played with ozzy while randy rhoads was still alive." she made the same face as i did. priceless. i'll never look at dr. aldridge the same again.

ok, sorry, continue.

I thought Carmine stuck out like a sore thumb with Ozzy, not a good match at all. His solo during the Dortmund Festival is tough to watch for me, with his showboating and acting like a frontman. Like Trigger said, he over played. His fills on Suicide Solution sound like disco. My BATM tour guide has Carmine in it, but thankfully I saw Tommy who is one of my favorite drummers, the man is a legend to me.

Why has he been quoted as one of the greatest rock drummers of all time? I mean, he just doesnt do it for me at all. I can see in certain places where that over playing would work, but in Ozzy, it didnt. I preferred Tommy Aldridge and Randy Castillo a lot more :)

Tommy is like a session drummer in my view very like Cozy Powell. Who did play in alot of different bands and if you look at his career now. He's been back and forward playing with Whitesnake then Thin Lizzy.Michael Lee filled in for Lizzy for a time then Tommy came back and i think he's doing the up coming UK Lizzy tour.I think it must be cool to be able to change from one band to the other instead of just knocking out the same set time after time...Plus he is a very watchable player and his solo is something else which alot of people don't like watching drum solos but his always goes down well with the crowd...

I have a a copy of the 'So tired' single that was meant for release but was withdrawn. It has 'So Tired' as the a side and 'Journey to the centre of Eternity' with Carmine's drum solo as the B-side! It is the Dortmund TV version and is truely horrible, As I understand it Carmine was out of the band and for legal reasons this version was pulled before it could be released. Thinking about that nasty solo now as sit here I can still taste the vomit that it indused in me all those years ago!

I agree with GI Tommy's solo is the only drum solo worth a listen, ihate solo's they are so anal and as drummer they hold no interest for me.
