I would have just bought a 4 conductor pickup.

but really, if you know how to handle a soldering iron(and if you're cheap) it's as easy as
installing a pickup to the pots, controls etc

Well of course. I have had freinds that were in to moding their pickups. They would buy different magnets and swap them out. For me there are so many options today that I don't need to mod my pickups. But it can be fun if you are into that stuff. And you are right it is not that hard to do.
