Question; were all epiphone headstocks like that back in 1989 or did you have to do some modding?

No mods, & I'm pretty sure all 89-90's mik epis were like that, that's why I waited a long time for that model to come around. I also have a '98 Giby standard, and aside from the electronics, it kinda holds it's own, it's actually a little more comfy to play (the Epi) because the neck is so much thinner, but to each his own.
