personaly i wouldnt get it. JCM800 is some good stuff but you are a young guitarist and there are many brands of amplifier you've yet to discover, it might be better to wait untill you know exactly what kind of sound you want. i was a marshall lover when i was younger but now i'd much rather take a good fender or vox.

also you wouldnt need an amp that big for gigs IMO. you could get away with something smaller and more portable. but if your sure its what you want why not.

That amp is LOUD!
I wouldn't get it with the whole "I'll be gigging soon" sort of outlook. When you get to that bride, cross it then. That's what I'd do anyway. Look at other heads too...Peavey makes great heads for metal and they're a bit cheaper. Laney does as well! But I guarantee you that if you get that amp, you won't be able to bring it much past 1 on the volume level if you're playing in your bedroom.
I would give it a pass personally. If you do eventually fall in love with a JCM 800, they are pretty common and you won't have a problem scooping one up.

wareagle wrote:heres what ive looked at so far, and what i like,

ive tryed out:
fender blues reisue deluxe-good amp, not enough disotortion, i added a pedal and overdrive and switch it around and didnt like the sound.
fender hot rod deluxe-better distortion then the blues, but i didnt like it, with a pedal it sucked.
peavey windsor-o.k. good for money, but tone isnt too great
peavey valve king-much better than windsor, right now one of my top choices
vox ac-good amp, too much money
lanley-forgot the model, didnt really like the tone

havent tryed:
mesa boogie,
jcm 800,
anything else? i need somthing under 1k.
best bet try everything you can, including randall

why not try one of the lower wattage valve amps on the market these days? they are very popular and with good reason.
blackheart and orange both make 15watt beauties,

most of these amps are easily comparable to far more expensive bits of kit, the blackheart is pretty much as good as an old marshall IMO and the orange tiny terror has a lot of fans it has just been released as a combo with a 70th anniversary celestion speaker so it should kick ass. If you have a little under a grand to spend you could go to town and get a great speaker cab to really bring out the sound. I am assumming you are from the uk... so...

blackheart 15watt head around £200
harley benton 2x12 cab £150 (don't waste money on a marshall cab)
the cab come with celestion vintage 30 speakers which are good but you would have plenty of cash to upgrade if you want.

would be a great practice amp and could do gigs.

other reccomendations peavey classic 30, laney lionheart range, cornford roadhorse (amazing combo), Epiphone So-Cal 50watt head, marshall vintage modern combo and of course randall, high-watt, hughes and kettner etc.

my teaches marshall original jcm800 + mxr+disortion for 1k

peavey valveking with a peavey xxx cab. that would be about 1k also. maybe used is cheaper.

peavey classic 30watt head with cab of some sorts. prob around 1k, cheaper used.

orange tiny terror, or an orange amp if i can find it, any 1 know how much they run for?

randalls seem to be too expensive for tube amps.

any others? note i need head an cab for under 1k, not just one.
The Marshall JCM800 for Teh WiN..
