Synthesizers

Im really getting into the band Radiohead and really like how (especially in the album Kid A) they use lots of sound effects and wierd noises. anyone know how much a very good synthesizer would cost around? Im gonna start saving now. Oh and if anyone can reccomend some equipment around the Radiohead type effects/noises, please do.
