What's on this Rickenbacker?

I like the look of Rickenbackers so I decided to search up a few pics. Question though...

What's the metal over the strings and pickup for?

I'm not exactly sure, But I've seen the same thing on an old Fender bass like this..

I believe it's a palm rest.

I can only imagine someone playing effectively with a pick with that on...that would really annoy me, I reckon I'd have to take a screwdriver to it : )
